The questioner : When finishing the recitation of Surat al-Fatihah and the surah that follows it, is it permissible to say: Subhaan Allah al-Azeem?
The Shaykh : Saying: "Subhaan Allah al-Azeem" after finishing the recitation in prayer or otherwise is a religious innovation (bid'ah), because it is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions that they used to say: Subhaan Allah, when they finished reciting. And it is known that saying: Subhaan Allah is an act of worship, because it is praise of Allah with truthfulness. And if it is an act of worship, then it is not permissible for us to legislate acts of worship that Allah and His Messenger have not legislated. If we do that, it becomes a religious innovation (bid'ah).
And on this basis, when the reciter finishes his recitation, he remains silent and does not say: Subhaan Allah al-Azeem, nor anything else, because that is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) some of Surat al-Nisa until he reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nisa 4:41] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He said: So he turned around, and behold, his eyes were shedding tears. May the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. And Ibn Mas'ud did not say: Subhaan Allah, nor did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) order him to do so. Likewise, Zayd ibn Thabit recited Surat al-Najm to him until he finished it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say to him: Say: Subhaan Allah al-Azeem, nor did he say it himself. This indicates that it is not the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or the way of his Companions to say Subhaan Allah al-Azeem when finishing the recitation, neither in prayer nor outside of prayer.
