Advice from the Shaykh on not opposing the Sunnah with the words of men.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : But, my brother, I advise you and others: if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says something, do not say, "Some scholars said..." Scholars may err in understanding; if the evidence reaches them, they may still err in understanding, and perhaps the evidence does not reach them at all; the evidence may be hidden.
Was the hadith of the plague not hidden from all the Companions, or did they not know about it?
When 'Umar turned toward Sham, he was told, "There is a plague in Sham." So he stopped and began consulting the Companions, bringing the Muhajireen and the Ansar to consult them, each one individually. None of them knew the hadith, but, praise be to Allah, Allah guided them to the truth, which was to return rather than proceed. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was the one who narrated the hadith, but he was absent on some business. He came and told them about it; he told them this hadith.
This hadith was hidden from all the Companions, even though they were gathered together. How could it be known after the community had dispersed? So scholars: we should not oppose the words of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) by saying, "Is there disagreement in it?" or "Did not some scholars say such and such?" If the Messenger told us this:
Let none of you wat with his left hand nor drink with his left hand, for indeed Ash-Shaitan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand. لا يأكل أحدكم بشماله ولا يشرب بشماله فإن الشيطان يأكل بشماله ويشرب بشماله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1799Sahih (Darussalam)
the matter is finished.
If you were given a choice, O believer, would you prefer the guidance of the Messenger or the misguidance of Satan? What would you say? The guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner : My intention, O Shaykh, is that some people attribute to some scholars the view that it is not forbidden.

The Shaykh : Even if they attributed it, my brother.

The questioner : Just to be sure, I mean?

The Shaykh : If they attributed it, I say: fear Allah.
And Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Stones will likely fall from the sky upon you. I say: The Messenger of Allah said, and you say: Abu Bakr and 'Umar said. يوشك أن تنزل عليكم حجارة من السماء أقول : قال رسول الله وتقولون : قال أبو بكر وعمر
And what about the scholars in the time of Abu Bakr and 'Umar? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said about them:
So if you had obeyed Abu Bakr and Umar, you would have gone on the right path إن يطيعوا أبا بكر وعمر يرشدوا
Sahih Muslim 681
And he said:
Stick to the two after me, Abu Bakr and 'Umar. اقتدوا باللذين من بعدي أبي بكر وعمر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3662Hasan (Darussalam)
It is explicitly stated to follow their opinion. If Abu Bakr and 'Umar contradicted the Messenger and we took their word, stones would likely fall from the sky upon us. So what about others?
Therefore, I am truly very pained when someone says, for example, when I tell him, "The Messenger said such and such," he says, "There is no disagreement!" Glory be to Allah. The one who contradicted may be excused if he contradicted the text due to his interpretation or lack of knowledge, but I am not excused. And just because the one followed is excused, it does not mean the follower is excused. Yes.
