The questioner : Your Eminence, what is your opinion of the one who cites divine decree as an excuse for committing sins and says: "It is written for me whether I am wretched or happy?"
The Shaykh : Yes.
My opinion is that he is truthful in that it is written for him whether he is wretched or happy, but is he compelled to do this? And does he know that Allah has written that for him?
None of us knows what is written for us until after we act. So if he does not know that he is doing a bad deed until after he does it, let him assume before acting that he has been written among the happy ones, and let him act with their actions.
Then this man who cites divine decree as an excuse for sin does not cite divine decree for the interests of this world. You find him doing every cause by which he achieves his objective, and he does not cite divine decree. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has invalidated the argument of divine decree by His saying:[An-Nisa 4:165] And if divine decree were an argument, it would have been an argument before the messengers and after the messengers. And He invalidated the saying of the polytheists who said: [Al-An'am 6:148] Yes.
