The questioner : It is mentioned in a hadith that the one who was frequently distracted in his prayer was guided by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to spit to his left three times, and it is known that spitting at that time requires turning to the left. Is that permissible for him?

The Shaykh : Yes, how could it not be permissible for him when it was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) who guided him to this? That is to say, if a person is frequently preoccupied with thoughts during prayer, his remedy is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prescribed: to spit to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.
The Companion who narrated this hadith said, "So I did that, and Allah removed from me what I was feeling." This is a testimony and an application: a testimony that he benefited, and an application that he acted upon it. However, someone might ask: If a person is with the congregation, how does he spit to his left? The answer is: If he is the only one on the left, he can spit to his left outside the mosque. Otherwise, let him spit to his left into his garment, into his head covering, or into a handkerchief. If that is not feasible, it is sufficient for him to turn to his left and say, "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan." Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This questioner, Abu 'Abdullah, says.
