Chapters on praying in clothing
Chapter on the obligation of praying in clothing and the saying of Allah the Exalted.

The Shaykh : We do not have this heading here, do you? Even what he indicated in the marginal note, it does not contradict, but I am afraid of the loss of the copies.
The reader: ... O Shaykh, it is mentioned in the commentary.

The Shaykh : Fine, go ahead, there is no harm.
The reader: And the saying of Allah the Exalted:
take your adornment at every masjid خذوا زينتكم عند كل مسجد
[Al-A'raf 7:31]
. And whoever prays wrapped in a single garment.

The Shaykh : Yes, and it is mentioned.
The reader: And it is mentioned regarding Salama ibn al-Akwa‘: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Button it, even with a thorn يزره ولو بشوكة
. There is a defect in its chain of narration. And whoever prays in the garment in which he has intercourse, provided he does not see any impurity.
It was narrated that 'Uthman bin Abul-As said: "The last instruction that the Messenger of Allah gave to me was that I should not appoint a Mu'adh-dhin who took payment for the Adhan." (sahih) وأمر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن لا يطوف بالبيت عريان
Sunan Ibn Majah 714
.

The Shaykh : He said: Chapter on the obligation of praying in clothing, and he cited as evidence the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid يا بني آدم خذوا زينتكم عند كل مسجد
[Al-A'raf 7:31]
. And adornment is clothing, due to His saying
Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" قل من حرم زينة الله التي أخرج لعباده والطيبات من الرزق
[Al-A'raf 7:32]
. And there is no doubt that adornment is for a person to wear in his prayer what people are accustomed to wearing. Based on this, we Najdis, our adornment is to wear the shirt, the trousers, the ghutrah, the taqiyah, and the shemagh. And the adornment of others is that they do not wear the ghutrah, the shemagh, and the taqiyah, is that not so?
The reader: Yes.

The Shaykh : There are regions in some countries where they do not wear this, so the adornment of every people is what they wear. And is it derived from the verse that a person should choose his most beautiful clothes when praying? It was said so, and it was said no, and the correct view is the saying of no, because it was not known that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to choose the beautiful of clothes except for the day of Jumu'ah and the festival. And the action of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) takes precedence over what is inferred from the verse. And when he commanded adornment, this became like the operative cause, and the stronger the operative cause, the more complete it is, so the more beautiful it is, the more complete it is. But this attribution, as long as it contradicts what was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), is considered void. And his saying
at every place [or time] of prostration عند كل مسجد
[Al-A'raf 7:29]
does not mean the built mosques, but every place of prayer, and the meaning is every prayer. And he specifically mentioned prostration—may Allah know best—because the closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so he should not be except covered by clothing. As for his saying
And whoever prays wrapped in a single garment ومن صلى ملتحفا بثوب واحد
, is it permissible or not? And the correct view is that it is permissible if he prays wrapped in it, then his prayer is valid. But if this wrapping prevents him from completing the prayer, such as preventing him from raising his hands in their places, or preventing him from spreading his arms in the bowing or in the prostration, then it is prohibited. His saying “And it is mentioned regarding Salama ibn al-Akwa‘” he mentioned it in the form of caution, because it is weak in his view, and for this he said: “There is a defect in its chain of narration”. And the hadith indicates that if a person has a shirt that is open from the top, he should button it, even with a thorn, because if he has a shirt open from the top and then bows, his private parts are exposed from the top. And in connection with “button it, even with a thorn,” even though the hadith is weak, some people took from a hadith narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Mu'awiyah ibn Haidah
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Umar came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was in his wooden oriel, and said to him: Peace be upon you. Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you! May Umar enter ? أنه أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فرآه قد فك إزاره
Sunan Abi Dawud 5201Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and the one who assumed thought that this was from the Sunnah, and he began to open his izar, whether in heat or in cold, or in a desert or in a climate or in the sea, when he sleeps, may Allah know best, and he says this is from the Sunnah. And this is a matter that happened to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) once and it is susceptible to meanings. It is possible that the Messenger was at that time in a state of sensitivity, it is possible that the buttons had broken, it is possible that it was hot, there are many possibilities. Otherwise, what is the benefit in buttoning a tie and then not using it? What is the benefit? Wasting time and wasting money. And the original state is non-prescription or prescription? Non-prescription, unless we know that he did it by way of worship. Therefore, we do not see that this is from the recommended practices, not even occasionally, not recommended occasionally, because if it were recommended, it would have been the regular habit of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or he would have commanded it. And as for the fact that its narrator acted upon it, that is from the independent legal reasonings that may err and may hit the mark. And the saying “Whoever prays in the garment in which he has intercourse, provided he does not see any impurity”, the apparent statement of al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) leans toward the view that semen is impure, due to his saying “provided he does not see any impurity”. And it is possible that he means by impurity something other than that. And in any case, the correct view is that semen is pure, but it is not befitting for a person to pray in a garment with the trace of semen, nor is it befitting for him to go out to people in a garment with the trace of semen, because people find this disgusting. He said
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded that one not circumambulate the House naked وأمر النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم أن لا يطوف بالبيت عريان
That one not circumambulate naked ألا يطوف عريان
And the circumambulation of the House is a prayer والطواف بالبيت صلاة
. So if it is prohibited to circumambulate the House except while naked, then prayer is even more so. And this does not imply that al-Bukhari sees that circumambulating the House is prayer, because it can be said that if it is prohibited to circumambulate the House while naked, then his prayer while naked is even more so. But let it be known that the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, due to their ignorance, say: Do not circumambulate the House in a garment in which you disobeyed Allah. And some of them say: Do not circumambulate the House except in a garment from the garments of the people of Makkah. For this reason, you find a person from them, when he arrives, goes begging from the people of Makkah for a garment to circumambulate with. If he does not find one, he removes his garment when he enters the Sacred Mosque and then circumambulates naked, may Allah save us. The man circumambulates and his private part is hanging down and they do not care, and the woman is shy and puts her hand on her private part and her hand is smaller, so she says while circumambulating:
“Today some of it or all of it is exposed *** And what is exposed of it, I do not expose it”
, she exposes it without the people exposing it, they walk blind... So in any case, this is from ignorance, O brothers. And which is more of an exaltation of Allah the Mighty and Majestic: that a person wears his garment and circumambulates for Allah in humility and shyness, or in this state that the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance do? The first, without doubt, but it is ignorance.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : What?
