The reader: Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: 'Asim ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Waqid ibn Muhammad narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir said:
Jabir led them in prayer in [his] lower garment which he had tied at the nape of his neck, his clothes being placed on the clothes-stand. Someone said to him, “You are praying in a single garment.” He replied, “I did that only that a fool like you might see me. Which of us had two garments in the time of God’s Messenger?”

The Shaykh : In this is evidence that a person should leave the better act for the sake of teaching, and in it is evidence that knowledge is better than voluntary acts of worship, because there is no doubt that covering the shoulders in prayer is better than uncovering them. But Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) did that in order to clarify the permissibility for people. For this reason, he was angry with the man and said: "so that a fool like you would see me". Then he cited as evidence for this his statement:
Who among us had two garments in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? وأينا كان له ثوبان في عهد الرسول صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم
, meaning that those who have two garments are few. Otherwise, there is no doubt, there is no doubt that there were many Companions who had more than two garments, but they are few. And it has passed us in the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa'd
In the story of the man who said to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): Marry me to her, meaning the one who offered herself. They asked him about the bridal gift. He said: My lower garment. في قصة الرجل الذي قال للرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم زوجنيها يعني الواهبة فسألاه عن الصداق قال: إزاري
because he did not have anything but a lower garment. Yes.
The reader: He said.
