The Shaykh : He (may Allah have mercy on him) says:
"They are, as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) described in his example, like rain sent down upon barren land"
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) compared what he was sent with to rain that fell upon the land. Of the lands it fell upon, some were barren land that holds no water and grows no grass. That is, it absorbs the water but does not grow anything. Such land benefits people neither by its growth nor by retaining the water. In a second type of land, the water was retained and people benefited by drinking it. In a third type of land, it absorbed the water and grew grass, thereby benefiting people. He says:
"As the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) described in his example, like rain sent down upon barren land
that holds neither the water"
It is also permissible to read: "that does not hold the water."
"nor any grass in it for any animal to graze upon"
"This is provided that the crops near it are not burned by fire or smoke"
If it is burned, there is no benefit at all, because the crops might sprout, and their owner might see that he is able to tend to them, but then fire or smoke comes and burns them.
