Explanation of the Book: The Beginning of Revelation, Faith, and Knowledge-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn al-Alla narrated to us, saying: Hammad ibn Asama narrated to us from Burayd ibn Abdullah from Abu Burdah from Abu Musa from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The example of guidance and knowledge with which Allah has sent me is like abundant rain falling on the earth, some of which was fertile soil that absorbed rain water and brought forth vegetation and grass in abundance. (And) another portion of it was hard and held the rain water and Allah benefited the people with it and they utilized it for drinking, making their animals drink from it and for irrigation of the land for cultivation. (And) a portion of it was barren which could neither hold the water nor bring forth vegetation (then that land gave no benefits). The first is the example of the person who comprehends Allah's religion and gets benefit (from the knowledge) which Allah has revealed through me (the Prophets and learns and then teaches others. The last example is that of a person who does not care for it and does not take Allah's guidance revealed through me (He is like that barren land.)
Sahih al-Bukhari 79
Abu Abdullah said: Ishaq said: "And there was a part that accepted the water; a low-lying area covered by water, and the flat, level part of the land"

The Shaykh : This is a parable regarding what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. People, with regard to what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, are divided into three categories: a category that understood what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, learned it, and benefited people with their knowledge; and another category that preserved what the Messenger brought, so people took from them. The first is like the jurists among the people of hadith, and the second is like the narrators of hadith. As for the third: the third category is one who did not lift his head with it, did not care about it, and turned away from it, may Allah protect us from that. The second is like the last one: a low-lying land that does not hold water, so people benefit from it, and does not produce grass, so people benefit from it; it neither reaches the water nor do people benefit from it. So it is with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) brought; it is divided into these three categories. The first category is fertile, good land that accepted the water and produced grass, so people benefited from it in itself. Another category, people benefited from its water, not from itself; they came and took from this water to water and plant. And the third category swallowed the water and did not benefit people; it is salty land, low-lying depressions that hold neither water nor produce. Yes.
