In the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, this expiation is by the father and mother, and in the other hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: (May your mother be bereaved of you). How is this reconciled?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... the supplication of expiation by my father and my mother ... Abu Hurayrah ...

The Shaykh : No, this is not the case, because this is a supplication, and you did not see the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) curse a person whom he wanted to make alert and attentive by saying, "May your mother be bereaved of you and your father," or "May your mother be bereaved of you." As for this, it is a supplication, meaning a supplication for the person, whereas that one is a supplication against him.

The questioner : We say it is applied only ...

The Shaykh : No, no, it is not applied only [in that way], but in its literal sense, yes.
