The Shaykh : As for what follows: Our lesson tonight will be a continuation of last night's lesson, in which we discussed what our imam recited in the Maghrib prayer. We discussed the first surah and finished it, and we promised to speak about the second surah. Do you remember it? No, yes, what is it? Correct, it is Surat al-Ma'un. We did not discuss it that night, but do you want us to discuss it tonight, or what we heard in our imam's recitation this night, or both?
Both. May Allah grant us success and assistance.
Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: The Basmalah is a verse from the Book of Allah, a verse from the Book of Allah, but it is not part of the surah that follows it, nor part of the surah that precedes it. Rather, it is an independent verse, and therefore it is not counted among the verses of the surah. For example, the first verses of al-Fatihah are [Al-Fatihah 1:2-7]
How many are these? These are seven verses. As for the Basmalah, it is not included in them, but some scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) say that it is included. Accordingly, the printing in the Noble Mushaf has been done such that you will find the Basmalah in Surat al-Fatihah numbered as the first verse, and the rest of the surah has no numbers written for it because it is not part of the surah.
Both. May Allah grant us success and assistance.
Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم(2) [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - (3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, (4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. (5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help. (6) Guide us to the straight path - (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
