The Shaykh : Now, we all believe that Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) is described with attributes of perfection. We all believe that Allah the Exalted is described with attributes of perfection, meaning that all attributes of perfection are affirmed for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), is that not so? Is that not so? Good, the evidence: Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: [An-Nahl 16:60] And He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Ar-Rum 30:27] And "mithl" (likeness) means "description," as He (Mighty and Majestic) said: [Muhammad 47:15] "Mithl" of it, meaning its description, its attributes are such and such. We all believe that Allah the Exalted is described with attributes of perfection from every angle. Look, is He described as being Alive? Answer me.
The student : Yes
The Shaykh : Yes, everything, yes. What is it, my brothers? Is He described as being Alive? Yes, indeed. I seek forgiveness from Allah. Yes, He is described as being Alive, described as Hearing, Seeing, Knowing, Able, Wise, Forbearing, Appreciative, and so on, as He (Mighty and Majestic) has mentioned of Himself. Is it possible for us to know in detail what is affirmed for Allah, or is it not possible? I mean, is it possible for me to know all the attributes of perfection of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from myself, or do I not know except by evidence?
The student: I do not know except by evidence.
The Shaykh : Yes, the second one, by evidence. I know in general that Allah the Exalted must be described with attributes of perfection, but I do not know the details. Is that clear, my brothers? Good. From where do I know that Allah is described with this specific attribute? From where do I know? From the Book and the Sunnah. I have no right to affirm for Allah any attribute that is not in the Book and the Sunnah, and I have no right to deny any attribute of Allah that is established in the Book and the Sunnah. This is a rule. The attributes of Allah in general are known to us. What is it? That Allah is what? Described with attributes of perfection. This is known to us, and we know that whoever is not perfect is not fit to be a Lord. Therefore, Ibrahim said to his father:[Maryam 19:42]
Now, do we know the details of those attributes with our minds, my brothers? No, by Allah, we do not know. This is a matter beyond what minds can grasp. Therefore, we must affirm every attribute that Allah has affirmed for Himself in the Noble Qur'an or in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). It is obligatory upon us. Are you with me, my brother? Are you with me? Leave the beard, leave the beard. What is the pocket? The beard. I know the beard from the pocket.
Now, listen, man. It is obligatory upon us to believe in everything by which Allah has described Himself. If we deny any of that, it is a great crime against Allah and against the texts of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, because we are too short to encompass Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and too short to judge Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with our minds. We only return to the Book and the Sunnah in this matter. And when Allah mentions something about Himself, we say, "We hear and we obey," and we do not say, "This is a metaphor for such and such," but we say, "This is truth in its reality." Otherwise, we would not be believing in what Allah has revealed. Take this rule, my brothers, live by it and die by it.[An-Nur 24:51] Do not say, "By Allah, this is not acceptable to the mind." We do not accept that at all. Who are you, O son of Adam, to judge the Lord of the Worlds that this is suitable and this is not suitable? I hope you take this rule firmly in your hearts, with your souls at peace with it, living by it and dying by it, because this is the path of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the path of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and the path of the Companions and those who followed them in excellence. Did you understand this rule? So, everything that Allah has informed us about Himself, whether by negation or affirmation, what is obligatory? It is obligatory to believe in it. If Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says about Himself: [Al-Furqan 25:58] It becomes obligatory upon us to believe that He has complete life and that He does not die. This is affirmation and negation. What is the affirmation? Life. And the negation? Death. We must affirm this just as we negate this. Good, take this rule. I will repeat it once or twice, and it is greater than being repeated a thousand times, because it is a creed. How can a person meet his Lord while saying, "I do not believe in this attribute because my mind did not accept it"? There are people now who claim to be Muslims, and we do not say they are disbelievers, but they say about some attributes, "We do not accept them because the mind does not accept them." By Allah, He has informed us of them. Glory to Allah! Are you judging Allah? Are you more knowledgeable about Allah than Allah? Do you think that when Allah informed His servants of this attribute, He wants to mislead His servants and have them believe in Him what is not permissible? If the matter is like this, the matter is very serious. Did you understand the rule or not? It is that everything Allah has informed us about Himself, whether by affirmation or negation, it is obligatory upon us to believe in it and affirm it, and our minds must submit to it, and we must not say, "So-and-so said, so-and-so said." Who is so-and-so saying about Allah? Let us return to the verse that passed us by. This is in the Tarawih prayer.
For those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the description of evil; and for Allah is the highest attribute
للذين لا يؤمنون بالآخرة مثل السوء ولله المثل الأعلىTo Him belongs the highest attribute in the heavens and earth
وله المثل الأعلى في السموات والأرضIs the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered
مثل الجنة التي وعد المتقون فيها من أنهار من ماء غير آسنThe student : Yes
