The Shaykh : We give examples in creed. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said... Do you know? Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
(21) No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - (22) And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, (23) And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember كلا إذا دكت الأرض دكا دكا وجاء ربك والملك صفا صفا وجيء يومئذ بجهنم يومئذ يتذكر الإنسان
[Al-Fajr 89:21-23]
But what?
What remembrance is there for him? أني له الذكرى
The time for remembering has passed, so there is no benefit. "Your Lord will come." Read the verse according to your fitrah (innate natural disposition) without having a madhhab (school of jurisprudence). What is the meaning of the verse for you? Does it mean your Lord Himself came, or did something else come? Read it free from desire, free from creed, and free from creed.
And your Lord has come and the angels جاء ربك والملك
[Al-Fajr 89:22]
What do you believe? I believe the Lord Himself came. Read this Qur'an to an ordinary person; he will say, "Yes, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, came. Your Lord came; no one else came." Allah says:
And your Lord has come and the angels جاء ربك والملك
[Al-Fajr 89:22]
And we say, "Someone other than Allah came." Say also, "And the angels did not come." The angels mean the angels. So I say, "Allah came." And if my Lord asks me on the Day of Resurrection, "How do you prove that I come?" What do I say? What do I say, people? "My Lord, this is Your word, which You revealed so that we believe in what the Qur'an brought." And then I submit.
The ta'wil (figurative interpretation) scholars who followed the path of reason and said to judge by reason rather than the Book and the Sunnah regarding the attributes said:
And your Lord has come وجاء ربك
Meaning, "The command of your Lord came," meaning, "The command of your Lord came." Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest! What will this man answer his Lord on the Day of Resurrection if He says, "I said in My Book
Your Lord will come جاء ربك
" and you say, "The command of your Lord came"? Where is your evidence for this? Where is your meaning for this? No, by Allah, he cannot give an answer. The Qur'an is clear in a clear Arabic language. It says:
Your Lord will come جاء ربك
We prefer "The punishment of your Lord came" because Allah says:
The punishment came to them جاءهم العذاب
"The punishment of your Lord came." Another person will come with a third meaning according to his mood. So which meanings that contradict the apparent wording of the text, which meanings do we follow? Answer, people. We make them all zero on the left and we believe in the apparent wording of the text: "Your Lord came," meaning, "The Lord of the worlds, Mighty and Majestic, came." But if someone says, "How does He come? How does He come? And from where does He come?" What do we say? We say, as Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding istiwa' (rising above the Throne): "The coming is not unknown; it is known. The how is not conceivable. We affirm the coming, but we do not know how He comes. He comes however He wills, in whatever attribute He wills. We do not know. These are matters of the unseen, and their meanings are greater than our minds can grasp. That is, their modality is greater than our minds can grasp. So let us affirm the meaning and leave the modality, because we have no knowledge of it.
