The Obligations of the Dead Upon the Living?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : If someone were to ask: What is the obligation of the people of the graves toward us, the people of the graves, our brothers, the people of the graves, our scholars, the people of the graves, our worshippers? What is their obligation toward us? What is their obligation toward us? Their obligation toward us is what Allah mentioned in His saying:
(8) For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful. (9) And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
[Al-Hashr 59:8-9]
Recite the third verse.
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
[Al-Hashr 59:10]

This is their obligation toward us. The obligation of the dead upon us is that we invoke Allah for them and say:
"Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
[Al-Hashr 59:10]
.
And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us what to say when we visit the graveyards. He said:
Say: Peace be upon you, abode of a people of believers, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will be joining you. May Allah have mercy on those who preceded us and you, and those who came after us. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
. This is what he said.
Brother, read to me what I said. Stand up, may Allah bless you. No, this brother, because he might have let his mind wander... once... it is not you, you understand. The one behind you, come on, my brother.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : What did I say? Say, I do not know, that is fine. What did I say? Who knows? Please.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : I did not hear. Did you hear anything? Repeat it in a loud voice.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : I have not heard anything up to now. Well done, perfect.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Okay, rest. This example is better than your first example. Now, my brothers, we say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Ummah what to say when they visit the graves:
Peace be upon you, abode of a people of believers, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will be joining you. May Allah have mercy on those who preceded you and those who came after you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
. So, is our visitation to them to benefit them, or to benefit ourselves? To benefit them. That means we benefit them when we go and invoke Allah for them; this is a benefit for them. It is not to benefit ourselves. It is true that we benefit from the visitation in that it is an act of worship, an act of worship, not in that these buried people will benefit us or harm us, but in that it is an act of worship. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Visit the graves, for they will remind you of the Hereafter.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1569Sahih (Darussalam)
. This is what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. A lesson is that you see this man who was with you yesterday, walking as you walk, eating as you eat, wearing what you wear, and now he is in his grave, detained by his deeds. We ask Allah to make our endings and yours good, and to make our graves a garden from the gardens of Paradise. This is it, my brothers. As for benefiting from them in the sense that they benefit us or harm us, they will not benefit us and they will not harm us. The only One who benefits us and harms us is Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
