Exegesis of Verses (13 - 15) of Surat al-Hadid.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the two hundred and sixteenth session of the sessions known as "The Open Door," which take place every Thursday. This Thursday is the twenty-seventh of the month of Jumada al-Thani in the year 1420. I ask Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, to make these sessions beneficial and good.
We begin this session with what we have become accustomed to beginning with, which is speaking about what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, facilitates regarding verses from the Book of Allah. Previously, we reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, "Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light." It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light." And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment.
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
He says:
On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
meaning: "Remember the Day when the hypocrites say." The phrase "the Day when they say" is a temporal adverb, and a temporal or spatial adverb, as well as a prepositional phrase, must have something to which it relates. The scholars supply the omitted element in every place with what is appropriate. Here, the appropriate supply is: "Remember, O human being, the Day when the hypocrites say..." This Day is the Day of Resurrection. The hypocrites are those who displayed Islam outwardly while concealing disbelief inwardly.
They say with their tongues what is not within their hearts.
[Al-Fath 48:11]
Hypocrisy did not manifest until the power of the Muslims had grown strong after the Battle of Badr. The Battle of Badr took place in Ramadan in the second year of the Hijrah. The Muslims achieved a crushing victory over the disbelievers. When the dawn of Islam broke and their power grew, hypocrisy appeared. In hypocrisy, a person appears to be a Muslim. Hypocrisy is when a person displays Islam outwardly while concealing disbelief inwardly. This became widespread among the Muslims; they would come to prayer with the people and attend the congregation, but it was heavy for them. The heaviest prayers for the hypocrites were the 'Isha' and Fajr prayers, because there were no lights for them to see by, and they only prayed to show off to people.
On the Day of Resurrection, light will appear for the believers and the hypocrites, and then the light of the hypocrites will be extinguished. You know, O human being, that the extinguishing of light after it has existed is a greater darkness than if there had been no light at all, is it not? Therefore, if you extinguish a strong light and then open your eyes, you will not see anything for a period of time. Thus, the extinguishing of the light after it has existed will be more severe for them than if there had been no light. Then the regret will be more severe, and the hypocrites will say to those who believed, "Look at us, look at us"
that we may acquire some of your light
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
meaning: "Let us take a little, just enough for our need."
It will be said, "Go back behind you قِيلَ ارْجِعُوا وَرَاءَكُمْ
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
As for "it was said," we do not know whether this was from the believers or from the angels; Allah knows best.
It will be said, "Go back behind you and seek light."
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
Is this a reality or a mockery of them? That is, is it a reality that they want to go to the place of the light where the light was extinguished, hoping that the light might be renewed, or is this a matter of mocking and ridiculing them? The verse is compatible with both possibilities.
Then after that,
Then a barrier will be set up between them فَضُرِبَ بَيْنَهُمْ
meaning: between the hypocrites and the believers, a barrier was set up with a door. This barrier is a great wall that prevents jumping over it. It has a door through which the believers enter, and the hypocrites are prevented from it.
its interior containing mercy
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
but on the outside of it is torment.
[Al-Hadid 57:13]
[And] for the hypocrites. You cannot imagine this state, because the state is too great for us to imagine; it is a tremendous state.
They call out to them ينادونهم
The caller is from among the hypocrites, and the one being called are the believers.
The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?"
[Al-Hadid 57:14]
Meaning: "In this world, we were with you; we prayed with you, gave charity, and remembered Allah."
They said: "Yes"
Meaning: "You were with us, but only outwardly, not inwardly." Therefore, they said,
Yes, but you brought ruin upon yourselves
meaning: "You led us astray."
And you waited
"You plotted against us," because the hypocrites plotted against the believers.
And you doubted
"You doubted the matter; you had no faith, and the worldly life deceived you."
The student: And the hopes deceived you.

The Shaykh : Yes.
And the hopes deceived you وغرتكم الأماني
Meaning: "You thought that you were doing good," because they say,
We intended nothing but good conduct and accommodation." إن أردنا إلا إحسانًا وتوفيقًا
[An-Nisa 4:62]
"We reconcile between the believers and the disbelievers, and between faith and disbelief."
when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe إذا لقوا الذين آمنوا قالوا ءامنا
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
Meaning: "They are with the believers."
but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you وإذا خلوا إلى شياطينيهم قالوا إنا معكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:14]
"They are with the disbelievers." They thought that by this equivocation, they had won the battle, so the hopes deceived them until the command of Allah came. The command of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, came through their death.
And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah.
[Al-Hadid 57:14]
The deceiver is Satan. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, about him when he whispered to our parents. Allah said about him:
So they led them astray
With what?
Through deception
Therefore, the deceiver is Satan.
(14) The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah. (15) So today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination. حتى جاء أمر الله وغركم بالله الغرور فاليوم لا يؤخذ منكم فدية
[Al-Hadid 57:14-15]
Allah is the One to be sought for help. A prisoner in this world can ransom himself and spend money to be released, but in the Hereafter, there is no ransom.
So today no ransom will be taken from you
[Al-Hadid 57:15]
O hypocrites!
or from those who disbelieved
[Al-Hadid 57:15]
Those who declared disbelief and became braver than these hypocrites; there is no ransom for these, nor for those.
Your refuge is the Fire
Meaning: "Your abode and your destination is the Fire."
She is your master
The one you follow and the one that follows you. Here, they follow the Fire by doing the deeds of its people, and the Fire follows them because they are deserving of it.
And evil is the destination
Meaning: "The return." This is a condemnation of it. May Allah protect us and you from it. We ask Allah to make us and you among those who are kept far from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, and among the successful, the righteous, and the prosperous.
And now to the questions. We start with the right, and each person has one question.
