Exegesis of Verse (11) of Surat al-Mujadilah.

The Shaykh : We return to the topic of our discussion, where we had reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
[Al-Mujadila 58:11]:
meaning: make room and expand.
And His saying:[At-Tawbah 9:38] includes the case where the one who entered said it, or the one who manages the gathering said it. That is why you find that the verb is passive: "it was said," and the speaker is not mentioned, to include both this and that. For example, if the gathering has a manager who seats the people and says to some of them, "Make room so so-and-so can sit," then let them make room. Or if a man enters and the gathering is crowded with sitters and he says, "Make room," then let them make room. And what is the reward for those who make room?
Their reward is like their action:[Al-Mujadila 58:11] Allah will expand for you the matters that are difficult for you in your religion and your worldly affairs. This is a great reward for a small deed. They used to sit with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and people from the senior Companions, from the people of Badr or others, would come to the gathering and stand, because they could not find a place. So perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say to the people, "Make room," or perhaps these standing people would say, "Make room." So Allah the Exalted commanded the one to whom the command to make room was directed to make room, and He made clear its reward.
[Al-Mujadila 58:11] But this is only from the one who manages the gathering, because he has authority and power. As for the one who enters, no, it is not permissible for him to make someone rise from their place and sit in it, due to the prohibition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of that. But if the one who manages the session sees that he should make so-and-so rise so that so-and-so can sit, there is no blame, but he does not do this except for a stronger benefit, lest something fall into the heart of the one who was told, "Rise," and perhaps he becomes angry and leaves the gathering. The summary now:
In this verse is evidence that if a person is told to make room, he should make room, and that his reward is that Allah will expand for him in his religion and his worldly affairs and in his grave.
If it is said, "Rise," meaning: stand up, then let him stand up. But this is only from the one who manages the session, like the owner of the house, for example, or whoever acts in his place. And Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:[An-Nur 24:28].
Then He the Mighty and Majestic said[Al-Mujadila 58:11]: meaning Allah the Mighty and Majestic informed that He raises the people of knowledge who were given knowledge, meaning: who were granted knowledge, and what is meant by that is religious knowledge, like the knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah and what supports them. [Al-Mujadila 58:11]: And He mentioned degrees because they are according to faith, knowledge, and benefiting from the knowledge. So whoever has stronger faith, his raising is higher, and whoever has broader knowledge and more spread and benefit for the Muslims, his raising is higher, because the reward is of the same kind as the deed. And in this verse is an encouragement to realize faith and to seek knowledge, because Allah raises the people of knowledge. And in this, the poet says:
"Knowledge raises a house that has no pillar, *** And ignorance demolishes the house of honor and nobility".
Stick to knowledge. Some of them said: "Whoever wants the world, let him stick to knowledge, and whoever wants the Hereafter, let him stick to knowledge, and whoever wants the world and the Hereafter, let him stick to knowledge".
[Al-Mujadila 58:11].
After that,[Al-Baqarah 2:234] meaning: All-Knowing, of everything we do, whether in secret or in public, and whether in words or in actions, and whether in the deeds of the hearts or in the deeds of the limbs. Everything we do, Allah is All-Knowing of it. If a questioner asked you, who created you? Who created you?
The questioner : Allah.
The Shaykh : Allah, who gave you hearing and eyes and hearts?
The questioner : Allah.
The Shaykh : Allah, if He is Allah the Mighty and Majestic, then He must know what we do. For this reason He said:[Al-Mulk 67:14]?
The answer: Yes, the Creator must know His creation. And in this is evidence of warning a person not to do what angers Allah. Do not do what angers Allah, not by word, not by action, and not by belief, because Allah is All-Knowing of it. Beware, as He the Mighty and Majestic said:[Ali 'Imran 3:28], and we stop here in order to receive questions.
And we ask Allah for us and for you beneficial knowledge and righteous action. Beware, O brothers, of reflecting upon the Qur'an and understanding its meanings, and drawing near to Allah the Exalted with it, and acting upon what is in it. For it is, by Allah, your happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you.
يا أيها الذين آمنوا إذا قيل لكم تفسَّحوا في المجالس فافسحوا يفسح الله لكمMake room
تفسحواAnd His saying:
when you are told
إذا قيل لكمTheir reward is like their action:
Allah will make space for you
يفسح الله لكمAnd when you are told, "Arise," then arise
وإذا قيل انشزوا فانشزواIn this verse is evidence that if a person is told to make room, he should make room, and that his reward is that Allah will expand for him in his religion and his worldly affairs and in his grave.
If it is said, "Rise," meaning: stand up, then let him stand up. But this is only from the one who manages the session, like the owner of the house, for example, or whoever acts in his place. And Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:
And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you
إذا قيل لكم ارجعوا فارجعوا هو أزكى لكمThen He the Mighty and Majestic said
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
يرفع الله الذين آمنوا منكم والذين أوتوا العلم درجاتAllah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
يرفع الله الذين آمنوا منكم والذين أوتوا العلم درجات"Knowledge raises a house that has no pillar, *** And ignorance demolishes the house of honor and nobility".
Stick to knowledge. Some of them said: "Whoever wants the world, let him stick to knowledge, and whoever wants the Hereafter, let him stick to knowledge, and whoever wants the world and the Hereafter, let him stick to knowledge".
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
يرفع الله الذين أمنوا منكم والذين أوتوا العلم درجاتAfter that,
And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do.
والله بما تعملون خبيرThe questioner : Allah.
The Shaykh : Allah, who gave you hearing and eyes and hearts?
The questioner : Allah.
The Shaykh : Allah, if He is Allah the Mighty and Majestic, then He must know what we do. For this reason He said:
Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?
ألا يعلم من خلق وهو اللطيف الخبيرThe answer: Yes, the Creator must know His creation. And in this is evidence of warning a person not to do what angers Allah. Do not do what angers Allah, not by word, not by action, and not by belief, because Allah is All-Knowing of it. Beware, as He the Mighty and Majestic said:
And Allah warns you of Himself
ويحذركم الله نفسَهAnd we ask Allah for us and for you beneficial knowledge and righteous action. Beware, O brothers, of reflecting upon the Qur'an and understanding its meanings, and drawing near to Allah the Exalted with it, and acting upon what is in it. For it is, by Allah, your happiness in this world and the Hereafter.
