A man works in the sale of livestock; is there zakah on this trade?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This questioner, Mu'ayyid al-Mutayri al-Hasu, says: I work in the sale of livestock. Is there zakah on this trade? Please inform me of this.

The Shaykh : Yes, there is zakah on it, because these livestock are, in your case, like the wealth of merchants, such as cloth merchants, gold dealers, and vessel dealers. This trade is called *'urud al-tijarah* (merchandise for trade). *'Urud al-tijarah* is everything a person prepares for profit, whether livestock, cars, equipment, land, or otherwise. Everything prepared for sale and profit is *'urud al-tijarah*, and its zakah is obligatory.
The method of zakah is that when the time for zakah arrives, which is the completion of the lunar year, you count the *'urud al-tijarah* you have and estimate their value at what they are worth when the zakah becomes obligatory. Then you pay out one-quarter of one-tenth, that is, one-fortieth. If the livestock you have are worth four thousand, then one hundred riyals is due, which is one-quarter of one-tenth, because the obligation for gold, silver, and *'urud al-tijarah* is one-quarter of one-tenth, that is, one-fortieth. If you wish, you can say two and a half percent of the hundred, or if you wish, you can say twenty-five out of the thousand. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
