A person should attribute things to Allah in conjunction with the cause, for example, saying: "Allah saved me through so-and-so," and not saying: "Allah and so-and-so saved me."

And among its benefits is a behavioral benefit: that a person should attribute the cause to Allah, attributing the thing to Allah in conjunction with the cause. For example, if a person drowns and a man comes and pulls him out, saving him from drowning, let him say, "Allah saved me through so-and-so." He may also say, "So-and-so saved me"; he may say that because he actually saved him. He may also say, "Allah saved me, then so-and-so." How many forms are these? But he must not say, "Allah and so-and-so saved me," because that is associating partners with Allah. And what indicates this choice—that one should attribute the thing to Allah the Exalted in conjunction with the cause—is that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called the Jewish boy to Islam, and this boy was in the process of dying, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered him Islam, so he accepted it, but he accepted it after consulting his father. He turned to him, looking at him, consulting him, and he said: "Obey Abu al-Qasim". The father authorized his son, or rather ordered his son, to accept Islam, while he himself had not accepted Islam in that state. After that, we do not know; Allah knows best. But in any case, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out saying:
Praise be to Allah Who has saved him through me from Hellالحمد لله الذي أنقذه بي من النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 3095Sahih (Al-Albani)
. The expression is clear: "He saved me from the Fire." And so it should be for us: when something happens through a cause, we should attribute it to Allah the Exalted in conjunction with specifying the cause.
