Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Eat of the good things We have provided for you”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then He said:
Eat from the good things with which We have provided you. كلوا من طيبات ما رزقناكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:57]
Eatكلوا
The command here is for permissibility. The command for permissibility means that what We have made permissible for you is this which We sent down upon you of manna and salwa.
And His saying:
of the good thingsمن طيبات
This “of” is for specifying the type, not for partitive specification, because they were permitted to eat all the good things. The good is the opposite of the bad, and the bad may be bad in its essence or bad due to its acquisition. The bad in its essence is like carrion, pork, and intoxicants, and the like of that. This is bad in its essence, as Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure قل لا أجد فيما أوحي إلي محرما على طاعم يطعمه إلا أن يكون ميتة أو دما مسفوحا أو لحم خنزير فإنه رجس
[Al-An'am 6:145]
meaning impure and bad. This is forbidden in its essence, forbidden for all people, for everyone, for its owners and others. The second type is forbidden due to its acquisition, such as what is taken through deception, or through riba (usury or interest), or through lying, or the like of that. So this is forbidden for the one who acquired it, and it is not forbidden for others if they acquire it from him through a permissible means. Be quiet, everyone. What is forbidden due to its acquisition is forbidden for the acquirer, and it is not forbidden for others if they acquire it from him through a permissible means. And what indicates this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to trade with the Jews, even though they used to eat illicit earnings. That indicates that it is not forbidden for the non-acquirer. What is forbidden due to its acquisition is not forbidden for the non-acquirer.
