What is the ruling on horses that their owner prepares for adornment, riding, and racing, and is there zakah due on them? And is it permissible to have a stake in horse racing?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
His EminenceThe Shaykh : What is the Shari'ah's view, in your opinion, regarding a person who keeps horses for adornment, or for trade, or for racing, and is there zakah due on them?

The Shaykh : There is no zakah due on them unless they are for trade. If a person trades in horses, buying and selling them, then he owes zakah, because they are merchandise for trade. But if he prepares them for racing, or prepares them for riding, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No Sadaqa is due from a Muslim on his slave or horse. ليس على المسلم في عبده ولا فرسه صدقة
Sahih Muslim 982a
.

The questioner : What is the ruling, O Shaykh, on this?

The Shaykh : What thing?

The questioner : The race?

The Shaykh : There is nothing wrong with that; rather, it is among the matters that are sought. For this reason, it is permissible to have a stake in horse racing. That is, it is permissible for you to race two people on horses for a monetary stake, because in this there is assistance in jihad in the path of Allah and practice in horse riding,
Blessing is in the forelocks of horses until the Day of Rising. والخيل في نواصيها الخير إلى يوم القيامة
