What is the limit of imitating the disbelievers, especially in our time?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you, Shaykh. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace. In order, my brother, in order.

The questioner : I say, O Shaykh: Imitating the disbelievers is a mark of this time. The means have spread, such as cars and electricity, and so on. Is there a limit to imitating the disbelievers where we say: doing this is imitation, and doing this is not imitation?

The Shaykh : Yes, imitating the disbelievers is when a person adorns himself with their attire, in clothing, or in speech, or the like, such that if a person sees him, he says: this is a disbeliever, this is one of the disbelievers. As for what Muslims and disbelievers share in common, that is not imitation. For example, now, men wearing trousers, we do not say this is imitation, because it has become the custom for everyone. As for the matter of cars and the like, there is no imitation in them at all.
