Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the twenty-sixth session after the hundredth of the Open Door sessions, which take place every Thursday of every week. And this Thursday is the twentieth of the month of Muharram, year 1417.
We continue our discussion of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' قَالَتِ الْأَعْرَابُ آمَنَّا قُلْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا
[Al-Hujurat 49:14]
Say
addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts
[Al-Hujurat 49:14]
The point of this is that faith is in the heart, and it is difficult, while Islam is outward in the limbs. Every person can perform a meticulous act with their limbs, of the best kind. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us about the Khawarij that they recite the Qur'an and that they pray, and that one of the Companions would consider his own prayer insignificant compared to their prayer, and his recitation insignificant compared to their recitation. And yet, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
They recite the Qur'an, but it does not go beyond their throats.
We ask Allah for safety.
They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray.
Sahih Muslim 1064a
This indicates that Islam is within the capability of every person. Every person can be a hypocrite; they can pray, prostrate, recite, fast, and give charity, while their heart is empty of faith. For this reason, He said:
Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts قُلْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا وَلَكِنْ قُولُوا أَسْلَمْنَا وَلَمَّا يَدْخُلِ الْأِيمَانُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ
[Al-Hujurat 49:14]
Here the expression is
Has not yet entered.
and He did not say: "and they did not enter." The scholars said: When "lamma" is used in place of "lam," it is evidence of the nearness of the occurrence of what it entered upon. For example, if you say: "So-and-so did not enter the village" versus "So-and-so is about to enter the village," what does it mean? "So-and-so traveled to the village and is about to enter it," meaning: that he is near it. Similarly, His saying the Exalted:
Rather, they are in doubt about My message. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.
[Sad 38:8]
meaning: they have not tasted it, but it is near them. Here He said:
Has not yet entered.
meaning: faith has not entered their hearts, but it is near entering them.
And if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything
[Al-Hujurat 49:14]
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged.
[Al-An'am 6:160]
Every person will find their deed, if it is good, then good, and if it is evil, then evil.
Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Baqarah 2:173]
The verse concludes with forgiveness and mercy, indicating that these people who said that they believed are near forgiveness and mercy, because faith has not entered their hearts, but it is near entering them. Here, a distinction is made between Islam and faith. Similarly, in the hadith of Jibril, a distinction is made between Islam and faith. In the hadith of Jibril, when he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
What is Islam?
What did he say? He said:
Islam.
Brother, what is Islam? It is not a specific question; answer it. That is, what is Islam that is next to it? Jibril asked the Messenger: What is Islam? You said:
that you testify that there is no god but Allah
Sahih Muslim 8a
Continue, complete what is next to it.

The questioner : And you establish the prayer.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : And you give the zakah.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : And you fast Ramadan and you perform Hajj to the House.

The Shaykh : He said:
Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
Sahih Muslim 8a
This is one.
establish prayer, pay charity, fast Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House
Sunan Ibn Majah 3973Hasan (Darussalam)
What did he say regarding faith? Faith.

The questioner : You believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers and the Last Day, and in the divine decree, its good and its evil.

The Shaykh :
To believe in Allah, His Angels, His, Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement, and Al-Qadar, the good of it and the bad of it.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2610Sahih (Darussalam)
So he distinguished between Islam and faith. And in other proofs, Allah makes faith to be Islam and Islam to be faith. Is there a contradiction in this?
The answer is: No. When Islam is paired with faith, they become two things. And when Islam is mentioned alone, or faith is mentioned alone, they become one meaning. There are many parallels for this in the Arabic language. For this reason, the people of the Sunnah and the community said: Islam and faith are one thing when they are separated, and two things when what? When they are gathered together, meaning when they are mentioned in the same context, they are two things. And if one of them is mentioned without the other, they are one thing. This is indicated by the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) enumerated deeds that are from Islam and made them from faith, saying:
Iman has sixty odd or seventy odd branches. The uppermost of all these is the Testimony of Faith: 'La ilaha illallah'
Riyad as-Salihin 682
although they are from Islam.
Islam means to bear witness that there is no god except Allah
Musnad Ahmad 367, 368Lts isnad is Sahih, Muslim (8)
and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is injurious from the path
Sahih Muslim 35b
And removing harm from the path is from Islam, because it is an act of the limbs.
And Haya (This term "Haya" covers a large number of concepts which are to be taken together; amongst them are self respect, modesty, bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith.
Sahih al-Bukhari 9
This is in the heart. The important point is: when are faith and Islam one thing? No, when they are separated, be patient, they are one thing. And if they are gathered together, they are two things. And we suffice with this amount in order to save the remaining time for questions. Those from the town, from here, prefer themselves over others, even if they are in hardship.
