The questioner : He says: I read this hadith in a book and I do not know whether it is authentic or weak. He says the hadith is
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lick his fingers after eating كان صلى الله عليه وسلم يلعق أصابعه بعد الطعام
and he said
When one of you eats food, let him not wipe his hand until he has licked it إذا أكل أحدكم طعاما فلا يمسح يده حتى يلعقها
Sunan Ibn Majah 3269Sahih (Darussalam)
and he said
Whoever licks the vessel, he will be forgiven من لحس الإناء استغفر له
?

The Shaykh : Licking the fingers after eating is part of what the Sunnah brought, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded it. Some people mentioned to me that doctors have stated that there are secret secretions on the tips of the fingers that are not known, and that they aid in digesting food. On this basis, licking them after eating has a great benefit, which is aiding in the digestion of food and making it easier to digest.
Whether that is established or not, the important thing is that the Sunnah came with licking the fingers, and also with wiping the vessel after eating. Many people have overlooked this. Some people would not lick their fingers, and some would lick their fingers but would not wipe the vessel, meaning they would not lick it. This may be due to ignorance of the Sunnah, or it may be due to shyness in front of some people at gatherings over food, or something similar. But what a person should strive for is to follow the Sunnah, even in this, even if people look down on it, or do not consider it a big deal, or find it objectionable. Do the Sunnah, for perhaps if you do it, Zayd and 'Amr will follow your example, and then people will follow this Sunnah, and you will be the cause of reviving it.
