The questioner : About five years ago, we intended to perform the 'Umrah, and when we arrived at the Haram, my sister and I made a face covering that came to resemble the niqab, meaning it covered the forehead and the rest of the face, while the eyes remained uncovered. We did this while unaware of the ruling on the niqab. What is required of us now that we have learned that the niqab is not permissible for a woman in ihram?

The Shaykh : Yes. You owe nothing, because anyone who commits a forbidden act in worship while unaware of it owes nothing. For example, if a person speaks during prayer while unaware that speaking is forbidden, his prayer is valid. For instance, if a person enters and greets a man who is praying, and the one praying says, "Peace be upon you," while unaware that it is forbidden, he owes nothing. It is established in the authentic hadith that Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque and prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). A man from among the people sneezed and said, "Praise be to Allah." Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "May Allah have mercy on you," addressing him. The people cast their eyes at him, disapproving of him. He said, "May my mother be bereaved of me," adding to what had come before. They began slapping their thighs to silence him, so he was quiet. When he finished his prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him. Mu'awiyah said: "By my father and mother, he did not rebuke me or scold me, but only said:
It is not permissible to talk during Salat because it consists of glorifying Allah, declaring His Greatness as well as recitation of the Qur'an إن هذه الصلاة لا يصلح فيها شيء من كلام الناس، إنما هي التكبير وقراءة القرءان
Riyad as-Salihin 700
or something to that effect. He did not order him to repeat the prayer. And regarding fasting, he said:
If anyone forgets that he is fasting and eats or drinks he should complete his fast, for it is only Allah Who has fed him and given him drink. من نسي وهو صائم فأكل أو شرب فليُتمّ صومه، فإنما أطعمه الله وسقاه
Sahih Muslim 1155
And so it is with all forbidden acts in all acts of worship: if a person does them while forgetting or unaware, he owes nothing. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
