Benefits of the Hadith: (He said: I accompanied Ibn 'Umar on the road to Makkah. He said: So he prayed the midday prayer for us in two units...)

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
This hadith, through its two chains from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), contains benefits. First, it shows the honor the Companions showed to their leader and elder, as they followed him, whether going or returning. For this reason, these Companions of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar stood with him, and when he sat, they sat with him. Likewise, a person should be respectful toward one who is older than him in age or status, following him rather than being followed.
Another benefit is that it is permissible for a person to ask about something he already knows, for the purpose of drawing attention to it. This is based on the statement of Ibn 'Umar
What do these people do?
Otherwise, he knew that they were praying, but he wanted to draw the attention of those present to what he wanted to tell them.
Another benefit is that when a person addresses someone younger than him in age, he says "O my son," because the father of this person who is younger than you is your contemporary, so you address him as "O my son." Conversely, if he wants to address someone older than him, he says "O my uncle." This is part of proper conduct, among the etiquettes that a person should adhere to, because they foster affection, love, and gentleness.
Another benefit is that as long as a person is traveling, he prays two units, even if his journey is long. This is based on his statement: "I accompanied the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and he did not exceed two units." This is the Sunnah, except when a person prays behind an imam who completes the prayer; it has been established that he must complete the prayer, following his imam.
Another benefit of this hadith is that shortening the prayer during travel was the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him. 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar counted three of the Caliphs: Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthman. His reference to 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) in his statement
Until Allah took him حتى قبضه الله
means that this applies when he is traveling. As for Mina, this is an exception, because 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to complete the prayer in the latter part of his caliphate.
Another benefit of this hadith is emulating the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in all his actions. The possibility of a specific exception is not valid, because the original principle is that one should emulate the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and there is no specificity unless there is evidence for it. For this reason, when Allah intended a specificity, He said
and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her, [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
He said
[this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
And when He permitted him to marry Zaynab bint Jahsh, who was with Zayd ibn Harithah, He said
So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
After him?
in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
And He did not say "so that there be no burden on you," even though the ruling was addressed to whom? To the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). This indicates that what is established for the Messenger is established for the Ummah, and this is clear. Therefore, we must be cautious of some scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) who, when they are unable to reconcile hadiths, say, "This is specific to the Messenger." This is like another method followed by some scholars when they are unable to reconcile; they say, "This is abrogated." This is an error. If you are unable to reconcile, say, "Allah and His Messenger know best." If someone asks,
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
Is it a good example? 'Aqil? And is it possible for there to be a good example?
