The Book of the Prayer of the Traveler and Its Shortening-03b

The reciter: And Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and Ibn Bashshar narrated to us, both saying: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated from 'Amr ibn Murrah from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said:
No one informed me that he saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying the Dhuha prayer except Umm Hani', for she narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered her house on the day of the Conquest of Makkah and prayed eight rak'ahs. I never saw him pray a prayer ever lighter than that, except that he would complete the bowing and prostration. Ibn Bashshar did not mention the word "ever" in his narration.

And it was narrated to me...

The Shaykh : The point in these hadiths is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray the Dhuha prayer four rak'ahs and add whatever he wished. This hadith is from 'A'ishah, and it was previously mentioned that she said, "I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pray the Dhuha prayer ever." This is a confirmed negation due to the word "ever." So how do we reconcile these two hadiths, both from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)? It is the same narrator; once she says he prays four and adds whatever he wishes, and once she says she never saw him pray it ever? The answer is to say that her negation that she never saw him pray it ever means that he did not do it on a basis of continuity and obligation, or that she never saw him pray it ever at a specific time, such as him praying it from the time the sun rises the height of a spear. The important thing is that the reconciliation must be a difference in time: either he would pray it sometimes and leave it off sometimes, or he would not pray it at the specific time that people are accustomed to praying it, such as praying it at the beginning of the time.
