The questioner : A man took money without right; how does he return it to its owners? And does he owe an expiation?
The Shaykh : He must return it to its owners if he knows them by name, or to their heirs if they have died. As for if they are unknown to him, or if he knew them but then forgot them, he must give charity with what he has for them in order to rid himself of it, not to draw near to Allah through it. In that case, his liability is discharged.
