Exegesis of Verses (04 - 12) of Surat al-Qamar.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the eighty-second meeting after the hundredth of the meetings known as: The Open Door Meeting, which takes place every Thursday, and this Thursday is the twenty-fifth of the month of Muharram, year 1419 AH.
We begin this meeting with what we have been accustomed to, which is speaking about the noble verses, and in the previous meeting we ended with the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them]. حكمةٌ بالغة فما تغن النّذر
[Al-Qamar 54:5]
: Yes,
(4) And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence - (5) Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them]. ولقد جاءهم من الأنباء ما فيه مزدجر * حكمة بالغة فما تغن النّذر
[Al-Qamar 54:4-5]
:
Allah the Exalted affirmed in this sentence
And there has already come to them of information ولقد جاءهم من الأنباء
[Al-Qamar 54:4]
that they, namely the Quraysh, were brought news, meaning the reports containing their guidance, well-being, and success.
that in which there is deterrence - ما فيه مزدجر
[Al-Qamar 54:4]
means: turning away from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disobedience, but they did not benefit from it.
And this sentence, as you hear, contains the letter lam and qad, both of which are tools of emphasis, and it contains an implied oath indicated by the lam in His saying:
And indeed, there came to them ولقد جاءهم
. Therefore, this sentence is affirmed by three affirmations: the oath, the lam, and qad. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is truthful without affirming His news, but this Qur'an is in a clear Arabic language, and the Arabic language, in its eloquence, affirms important things so that they become fixed and rooted in the mind.
Allah the Exalted said:
A profound wisdom حكمة بالغة
meaning: that the news brought to them was wisdom. This is like His saying, the Exalted:
And Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom وأنزل الله عليك الكتاب والحكمة
[An-Nisa 4:113]
. And wisdom is: the conformity of a thing to its place, and it is expressed by their saying: "placing the thing in its appropriate position". And there is no doubt that the Shari'ah of Allah is all wisdom, all in accordance with what is in the well-being of the servants in their worldly life and their hereafter.
And His saying:
Profound بالغة
means: complete and reaching the intended purpose.
but warning does not avail [them]. فما تغن النّذر
[Al-Qamar 54:5]
The word "ma" here can be a negation, meaning that the warnings do not benefit them in any way, and it can be an interrogative in the sense of rebuke, meaning: so what will benefit them? Both are correct. So the warnings did not benefit them in any way, and if these warnings containing the perfect wisdom did not benefit them, then what will benefit them?
The answer: Nothing, because they are defiant and arrogant.
Then He said, Mighty and Majestic:
So turn away from them فتولّ عنهم
. And the speech ends here. "Tawalla" (He turned away): the address is to the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding these people, because they are defiant and arrogant.
But of no avail will be signs or warners to a people who do not believe وما تغن الآيات والنّذر عن قوم لا يؤمنون
[Yunus 10:101]
,
And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic." وإن يروا كلّ آية يعرضوا ويقولوا سحر مستمرّ فتولّ عنهم
[Al-Qamar 54:2]
What they were promised will come to them, and what you were promised will be realized for you. It is good to pause here
So turn away from them فتولّ عنهم
and then resume and say:
The Day the Caller calls يوم يدع الدّاع
[Al-Qamar 54:6]
, because if you connect it, it would mislead the listener to think that the turning away will be on the Day the caller calls, and it is known that the turning away is in this world, not on the Day the caller calls.
And His saying:
The Day the Caller calls يوم يدع الدّاع
[Al-Qamar 54:6]
is a circumstantial phrase, and a circumstantial phrase must have a governing verb, just as a prepositional phrase must have a governing verb, and all objects must have a governing verb. So what is the governing verb in His saying:
The Day they will emerge from the graves يوم يخرجون من الأجداث
[Al-Ma'arij 70:43]
?
The governing verb is "they come out,"
The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding, (7) Their eyes humbled, they will emerge يوم يدع الدّاع إلى شيء نكر خشّعا أبصارهم يخرجون
[Al-Qamar 54:6-7]
so it is connected to "they come out," meaning: the punishment will come to them at that time
they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading, يوم يخرجون من الأجداث كأنّهم جراد منتشر
[Al-Qamar 54:7]
.
And His saying:
The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding, يوم يدع الدّاع إلى شيء نكر
[Al-Qamar 54:6]
is the caller of the Day of Resurrection.
To something unknown إلى شيء نُكُر
means: a great denial due to the severity of its terrors, for there is nothing more denied by the souls than that day, because they have not witnessed anything like it.
With their eyes cast down خشّعا أبصارهم
means: that their eyes are humble and submissive, as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
looking from [behind] a covert glance ينظرون من طرف خفيّ
[Ash-Shuraa 42:45]
. They are now arrogant, raising their heads, thinking that people are beneath them and they are above them, but the day will come when it will be the opposite.
they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading, يخرجون من الأجداث كأنّهم جراد منتشر
[Al-Qamar 54:7]
The graves are: the tombs.
As if they were scattered locusts وكأنّهم جراد منتشر
So they will come out of the graves in this manner, whereas in this world they have a leader, they have an emir, they have a guide, and they know their path, even if it is a corrupt path.
Racing ahead toward the Caller مهطعين إلى الدّاع
[Al-Qamar 54:8]
: means that they are hastening, bending their necks, like a man when he hastens and runs, you find he puts his head forward, bending it. So they come out of the graves
Racing ahead toward the Caller مهطعين إلى الدّاع
[Al-Qamar 54:8]
meaning: hastening, lowering their heads from fear, terror, and severity.
The disbelievers say, "This is a day of hardship." يقول الكافرون هذا يوم عسر
: And consider His saying: "The disbelievers say," and He did not say: "The people say," because this hard day is undoubtedly in itself a severe and great hardship, but it is hard for the disbelievers and easy for the believers, as Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day. وكان يوماً على الكافرين عسيراً
[Al-Furqan 25:26]
And He said, the Exalted:
For the disbelievers - not easy. على الكافرين غير يسير
[Al-Muddaththir 74:10]
, and as for the believers, it is easy, and praise be to Allah. May Allah make us and you among them.

The questioner : Amen.

The Shaykh :
The disbelievers say, "This is a day of hardship." يقول الكافرون هذا يوم عسر
Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, began with the stories of the prophets in a concise manner in this surah, but it is profoundly affecting. If you read it with deliberation and reflection, you will find it very affecting. Concise words, but they are completely deterrent:
before them, did the people of Noah كذّبت قبلهم قوم نوح
[Al-Hajj 22:42]
And Noah is the first of the messengers, the first messenger Allah sent to the earth is Noah, peace be upon him, by the indication of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him إنّا أوحينا إليك كما أوحينا إلى نوح وإلى النّبيّين من بعده
[An-Nisa 4:163]
, and He said, the Exalted:
And We have already sent Noah and Abraham and placed in their descendants prophethood and scripture ولقد أرسلنا نوحًا وإبراهيم وجعلنا في ذرّيتهما النّبوّة والكتاب
[Al-Hadid 57:26]
. And by this we know that what some historians mentioned, that Idris is the grandfather of Noah, is a lie without doubt. And there was no messenger before Noah, even in the hadith of intercession, it is explicitly stated that he is the first messenger Allah sent to the people of the earth. And therefore, it is part of our creed that the first of the messengers is Noah and the last of the prophets is Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family and his Companions, and he is a prophet and a messenger.
before them, did the people of Noah كذّبت قبلهم قوم نوح
[Al-Hajj 22:42]
And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not detail this denial, but He revealed a complete surah regarding it, and what is it?

The questioner : Surat Noah.

The Shaykh : Surat Noah, in which Allah detailed completely their denial and their taking.
So they denied Our servant فكذّبوا عبدنا
And he is Noah, and Allah described him with servitude, because servitude is the noblest of the titles of humans. Servitude to Allah is the noblest of the titles of humans, and it is: humbling oneself to Him through obedience, turning back, reliance, and others. And it is of three types:
General servitude, which includes all creation, and it is: humbling oneself to the cosmic command, as He, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant. إن كلّ مَن في السّماوات والأرض إلاّ آتي الرّحمن عبدًا
[Maryam 19:93]
. "Every" means: no one in the heavens and the earth except, and this is his state, that he is coming to the Most Merciful as a servant. And this is servitude to the cosmic command, because the cosmic command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, no one can escape from it, no matter how strong he is.
The second type: the special servitude of the believers, like His saying, the Exalted:
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily وعباد الرّحمن الذين يمشون على الأرض هَونًا
[Al-Furqan 25:63]
. This is general for every believer.
The third: the special servitude of the prophets, and this is like His saying, the Exalted:
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night سبحان الذي أسرى بعبده ليلاً
[Al-Isra 17:1]
,
Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant تبارك الذي نزّل الفرقان على عبده
[Al-Furqan 25:1]
,
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, who has sent down upon His Servant the Book الحمد لله الذي أنزل على عبده الكتاب
[Al-Kahf 18:1]
, and among that is this verse
So they denied Our servant فكذَّبوا عبدنا
.
And Noah, peace be upon him, remained among them a thousand years except fifty years, calling them to Allah, but whenever he called them to Allah to forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears so as not to hear His saying, and they covered themselves with their clothes so as not to see him, and they were arrogant in arrogance. And there is nothing more eloquent than this arrogance than for a person to put his hand in his ears so as not to hear the caller's saying, and to cover himself with his garment so as not to see him.
And they said, "He is a madman" وقالوا مجنون
: The madman is the one who has lost his mind and raves with what he does not know. They said that he is mad. This saying was said to all the messengers. Allah the Exalted said:
Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman." كذلك ما أتى الذين من قبلهم من رسول إلاّ قالوا ساحر أو مجنون
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:52]
, and "or" here is either for variation, meaning some say he is a sorcerer and some say he is mad, or it is for variation, meaning in the sense that some say he is a sorcerer and some say he is mad, or that they say this and that. In any case, the first thing said about Noah was that he was mad.
And he was repelled وازدجر
: "Izdaraja" means: he rebuked with severe rebuke, and rebuke is driving away with severity and violence, and the dal here is inverted from a taa, and the scholars said: that the increase in the structure indicates an increase in the meaning, and the meaning is that it is a severe rebuke.
And His saying:
And he was repelled وازدجر
should not be connected with what comes before it, because if you connected it and said
and said, "A madman," and he was repelled. وقالوا مجنون وازدجر
[Al-Qamar 54:9]
, the listener would think that they are saying: mad and he was rebuked, meaning: someone else rebuked him, but the meaning is the opposite. So they denied Our servant, and he was rebuked, this is the meaning. They denied and he was rebuked. So it is better to pause
And they said, "He is a madman" وقالوا مجنون
and then connect and say:
And he was repelled وازدجر
so that here these deniers did not limit themselves to denial, but they denied, rebuked, threatened, and mocked.
When the time was long, he called his Lord:
Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." أنّي مغلوب فانتصر
[Al-Qamar 54:10]
. "Allah Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest) are two words
Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." أنّي مغلوب فانتصر
[Al-Qamar 54:10]
. And he called for a response, Exalted and Majestic is He. Allah responded, He said:
Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down ففتحنا أبواب السّماء بماء منهمر
[Al-Qamar 54:11]
:
We opened فتحنا
And in another reading:
We opened فتّحنا
, and both are correct. It is recommended for one who knows the readings to read with this one at times and with that one at times, on the condition that this is not done in the presence of the common people, because it is not recommended to recite to the common people using a reading that differs from the mushaf in their hands, lest it cause confusion for them, or perhaps the status of the Qur'an in their hearts would be lowered, or they would attribute error and distortion to you. But among students of knowledge, in teaching, or between you and yourself, it is recommended to read with the established readings, once with this and once with that. We say the same regarding the various forms of worship; you do this at times and that at times, such as the different opening supplications and the like.
Then We opened the gates of the heaven ففتحنا أبواب السّماء
[Al-Qamar 54:11]
Gates, every gate in the sky was opened.
with a pouring down of water بماء منهمر
No, it was more intense.
And caused the earth to burst with springs وفجّرنا الأرض عيوناً
[Al-Qamar 54:12]
Meaning: springs of water. And consider His saying, Exalted is He:
And caused the earth to burst with springs وفجّرنا الأرض عيوناً
[Al-Qamar 54:12]
, and He did not say: the springs of the earth. It is as if the entire earth had become erupting springs, even the oven, which is the farthest thing from water due to its heat and dryness, began to boil, as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed حتّى إذا جاء أمرنا وفار التّنّور
[Hud 11:40]
.
In this is an indication of the power of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, that is not hidden, and that these floods that occur now and before now only occur by the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. They are not as the naturalists say, that they are from nature. They say: nature stirred up, nature became angry, and the like of that. We ask Allah for safety. Rather, they are by the command of the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is.
And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined. وفجّرنا الأرض عيوناً * فالتقى الماء على أمر قد قدر
[Al-Qamar 54:12]
Here there are two waters: water descending from the sky, indicated by His saying:
Then We opened the gates of the heaven ففتحنا أبواب السّماء
[Al-Qamar 54:11]
, and water from the earth that gushed forth, indicated by His saying:
And caused the earth to burst with springs وفجّرنا الأرض عيوناً
[Al-Qamar 54:12]
. So why did He not say, "So the two waters met"?
Because the intended meaning is the water of the sky and the water of the earth. The scholars said: He intended the genus, because the genus of water here is one, the water of the earth and the water of the sky. Or it can be said: Because the purpose of these two waters was one thing, which is their punishment, it was correct to use the singular.
the waters met for a matter already predestined. التقى الماء على أمر قد قدر
[Al-Qamar 54:12]
Meaning: upon something that Allah, the Exalted, has decreed and predestined in eternity. For there is nothing that occurs except that it is written. Allah, the Exalted, said:
and all things We have enumerated in a clear register. وكلّ شيء أحصيناه في إمامٍ مبين
[Ya-Sin 36:12]
, meaning from the deeds of the children of Adam and from what happens on earth. Everything is counted. For this reason He said:
as a matter already decreed على أمرٍ قدْ قُدر
.
Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails, وحملناه على ذات ألواح ودسر
[Al-Qamar 54:13]
. If Allah wills, we will discuss this in the next meeting so that we can devote time to the questions and start with the right side.
