Exegesis of Verses (41 - 50) of Surat al-Qamar.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows:
This is the eighty-sixth session of the gatherings known as the Open Door, which take place every Thursday, and this Thursday is the twenty-sixth of the month of Jumada al-Ula, 1419 AH.
We begin this session, as is our custom, by explaining part of the speech of the Lord of the worlds (Mighty and Majestic). We have reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Qamar 54:41-42]:
The sentence is affirmed by the estimated oath, the letter lam, and the word qad:
[Al-Qamar 54:41] means: his people, with Pharaoh at their head, as Allah the Exalted informed in other multiple verses that He sent Musa to Pharaoh and his elite. The warnings came to them. It was said that the warnings means the warning, which is intimidation. It was also said that it is the plural of nathir, which is everything by which a servant is warned, and the intended meaning is the signs that Musa brought, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Isra 17:101] This latter view is the correct one, that the warnings is the plural of nathir, and it does not mean the warning. Indicating this is His saying:
[Al-Qamar 54:42] meaning: with all the signs indicating the truth of the message of Musa (peace and blessings be upon him), they denied them and said: Musa is insane and he is a sorcerer, until Pharaoh, out of his arrogance, said: [Ash-Shu'ara 26:27].
And when they denied the signs, Allah the Exalted took them with the taking of the Mighty and the Capable (Exalted and Majestic is He). Mighty means: the Prevailing. Capable means: the Able, but it is more eloquent than the word Able because of the addition of letters. It was said: "The addition in structure indicates an addition in meaning", and this is generally the case, not always. Allah the Exalted mentioned that their taking was the taking of the Mighty and the Capable, who is Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because Pharaoh was arrogant and used to say: I am your supreme Lord. And he used to mock Musa and the One who sent him. So it was fitting that Allah mentioned His taking them with the taking of the Mighty and the Capable. Allah the Exalted summarized this story in this verse, but He detailed it in many verses, and that their taking was by drowning them in the sea. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) drowned him with what he used to boast of, because he used to say to his people:[Az-Zukhruf 43:51] He confirms this to them. They will say: Yes.
[Az-Zukhruf 43:51-52] By this is meant Musa.
Allah drowned them in the sea when Pharaoh gathered his soldiers and pursued Musa and those who followed him to destroy them, but Allah, by His praise and His might, destroyed him.
Then He said, the Exalted:[Al-Qamar 54:43]
[Al-Qamar 54:43] means: Do you have a certificate in the books that Allah has absolved you from the consequences of your actions? What is the answer?
The questioner : You do not have it.
The Shaykh : Neither this nor that, meaning: Either your disbelievers are better than the previous disbelievers, or you have a certificate from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that Allah has written for you that He will not punish you. And none of this was the case. So their disbelievers are not better than the previous disbelievers, and they do not have a certificate in the records.
They have a third claim:[Al-Qamar 54:44]:
And "am" here means "bal" (but rather) of transition, and it is a transition of emphasis, meaning: But rather they say, "We," and the pronoun refers to Quraysh.
"All" here means: a group. And for this reason he said: "victorious" and did not say: "victorious" (plural), meaning a large group victorious over Muhammad and his people. This is the meaning of his speech. So they were pleased with themselves and thought that they were capable of destroying Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his message. So what was the answer from Allah?
Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Qamar 54:45] "Defeated" means: they will be humiliated with the worst humiliation and they will turn their backs, and they will not be able to resist, or defend, or attack, even though they used to say: [Al-Qamar 54:44] But there is no victory for them.
And this is what happened, praise be to Allah. The first time it happened was in the Battle of Badr, when their leaders, elders, and chiefs gathered, between nine hundred and one thousand men, against three hundred and a few dozen men with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And they were defeated, praise be to Allah, with the worst defeat, and the news spread about them, and twenty-four of their leaders were thrown into a well of Badr, a foul and stinking well. And this is certainly the worst defeat. For this reason he said:[Al-Qamar 54:45] This is their punishment in this world.
In the Hereafter:[Al-Qamar 54:46]
meaning: more severe in destruction and more bitter in taste, because the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe than the punishment of this world.
Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said what will happen to them and those like them, so He said:[Al-Qamar 54:47] Misguidance in this world so they will not find the right path, and burning in the Hereafter, meaning: in a fire that is intensely blazing, which will burn them. Every time their skins are cooked, Allah will replace them with other skins so that they may taste the punishment.
And it is possible that His saying: means: in misguidance from the path by which they find the way to Paradise, because they were misguided in this world, so they were misguided in the Hereafter.
[Al-Qamar 54:48] They are dragged as a corpse is dragged to be moved away from the dwellings. And they are not dragged on their backs, but on their faces, refuge sought in Allah.
And it is said:[Al-Qamar 54:48] And Allah the Exalted said in another verse: [Az-Zumar 39:24] He shields with his face, which he used to shield in this world from the heat with his hands to protect his face. But in the Fire, he has nothing to shield his face from the Fire, but he shields with his face. We ask Allah for safety, meaning: he has no protection that shields his face from the heat of the Fire. So they swim in the Fire on their faces. This, my brothers, is not the myths of the ancients, it is not stories that are told. This is a reality that we testify to, and by Allah, it is as if we see it with our own eyes. This must be the case for every sinner: [Al-Qamar 54:48] And the draggers are the angels assigned to them, because the Fire has angels assigned to it.
And it is said:[Al-Qamar 54:48] Look, my brother, at the humiliation, both physical and spiritual, bodily and spiritual. The bodily is that they are dragged on their faces, and the spiritual is that they are rebuked and it is said to them: [Al-Qamar 54:48] meaning: she has been burned. And Saqr is one of the names of the Fire. We ask Allah for safety for us and for you.
Then He said, (Exalted and Majestic is He):[Al-Qamar 54:49]: When He mentioned the punishment of the people of the Fire, then He will mention the pleasure of the people of Paradise, He mentioned in between that this creation and its variation is by the decree of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So everything created is by decree. Every speck in a grain of sand is created by decree. Every drop that falls on the earth from the clouds is created by decree.
: Everything encompasses everything other than the Creator, because there is nothing but the created and the Creator. So if everything is created, the Creator is alone the First, before whom there is nothing, and the Last, after whom there is nothing, and the Apparent, above whom there is nothing, and the Hidden, below whom there is nothing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Muwatta Malik 46:4 Weakness means: the laziness of the person. And wisdom means: the prudence of the person and his activity in seeking what benefits him and avoiding what harms him. Everything.
And in this noble verse is evidence that the human being is created by Allah the Exalted, and that his actions are created by Allah, and that everything has been decreed and finished. And if that is so, to whom does the human being turn when he is afflicted with hardship?
To Allah the Creator. And if he wants ease, he also turns to Allah the Creator. Let him not boast and be pleased with himself if he is afflicted with distress, and let him not despair if he is afflicted with distress. For the matter is in the hand of Allah. For this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: The strong is the one who is strong in his faith, strong in his will, determination, and activity. And the intended meaning is not the one who is strong in his body. The strength of the body is either for you or against you. If you use it in righteous work, it is for you. And if you are unable to do it despite doing it in a state of strength, it is written for you. And if you use this strength in disobedience to Allah, it is against you.
But the intended meaning of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) "the strong" is: in his faith and his will. As for the strength of the body, it is for you or against you.
He said: In both the strong and the weak there is good. And this sentence is called by the scholars of rhetoric: a precautionary sentence. Because when he said: the one who thinks thinks that the weak believer has no good in him. So he said: , and there are parallels to it. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Hadid 57:10] meaning: before the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, [Al-Hadid 57:10]: All of these and those, meaning: So do not think that this difference diminishes the status of the others and deprives them of good.
And Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:95]: So here the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2664, so if you do that, you will strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and be resolute, active, and strong in your intention, if something befalls you.
He said:, it is obligatory for you to strive for good, but it is not obligatory for you that what you desire be fulfilled.
The important thing is that everything is by divine decree, even weakness and strength. So whoever Allah has decreed guidance for, it is by decree, and whoever Allah has decreed misery for, it is by decree. But what is the cause of Allah decreeing misery for the servant?
It is the servant himself, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[As-Saf 61:5].
He said:[Al-Qamar 54:50] meaning: We do not command in what We intend to be except once, that is, only one time without repetition.
without delay. Look, Glorified is Allah! The command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is one, without repetition, and secondly: with immediate speed, faster than can be, , "Be, and it is." It became famous among the common people that they say: "O He whose command is between the kaf and the nun" and this is wrong. The command of Allah is not between the kaf and the nun, but after the kaf and the nun, because Allah said: when?
The questioner : After "Be."
The Shaykh : After "Be," so their saying "between the kaf and the nun" is wrong, because the command is not completed between the kaf and the nun. The command is not completed except with the kaf and the nun, but it is after the kaf and the nun immediately, like the flash of lightning. If you wish to see the wonders of that, look at the earthquakes. They strike hundreds or thousands of villages and in one moment they annihilate them. If pickaxes, tractors, and bombs came, they would not do what was done in one moment by the command of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Ask the experts on earthquakes and you will find the answer.
Look at what is greater than that: the dead in their graves, the insects, the animals, and all things are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection with one word, as He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:[Ya-Sin 36:53] I ask Allah to make me and you among those who are present for good. One shout only, and then they are all: all of them, with us: that is, with us, present. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has fulfilled His promise.
[Al-Qamar 54:50] like the flash of lightning.
Then He (Mighty and Majestic) said[Al-Qamar 54:51] .
The questioner : Time for questions.
The Shaykh : Questions?
Good, we stop at this noble verse, and we ask Allah to make the Qur'an an intercessor for us and for you with Him on the Day of Resurrection.
The questioner : Amen.
The Shaykh : And to be our guide to His Paradises, for He is Able to do all things.
I fear Allah, I fear Allah, O brothers, in the great Qur'an by understanding its meaning and acting upon it, for it is the healing for what is in the chests and the admonition for the believers. Allah the Exalted said:[Yunus 10:57].
To the questions now, we start with the oath.
As for what follows:

We begin this session, as is our custom, by explaining part of the speech of the Lord of the worlds (Mighty and Majestic). We have reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(41) And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning. (42) They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.
The sentence is affirmed by the estimated oath, the letter lam, and the word qad:
And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.
And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs
They denied Our signs, all of them,
[Pharaoh] said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."
Allah the Exalted summarized this story in this verse, but He detailed it in many verses, and that their taking was by drowning them in the sea. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) drowned him with what he used to boast of, because he used to say to his people:
O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me
يا قوم أليس لي ملك مصر وهذه الأنهار تجري من تحتيthen do you not see? (52) Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Allah drowned them in the sea when Pharaoh gathered his soldiers and pursued Musa and those who followed him to destroy them, but Allah, by His praise and His might, destroyed him.
Then He said, the Exalted:
Are your disbelievers better than those
أكفّاركم خير من أولئكمor have you immunity in the scripture?
The questioner : You do not have it.
The Shaykh : Neither this nor that, meaning: Either your disbelievers are better than the previous disbelievers, or you have a certificate from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that Allah has written for you that He will not punish you. And none of this was the case. So their disbelievers are not better than the previous disbelievers, and they do not have a certificate in the records.
They have a third claim:
Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?
And "am" here means "bal" (but rather) of transition, and it is a transition of emphasis, meaning: But rather they say, "We," and the pronoun refers to Quraysh.
All victorious
Allah the Exalted said:
[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].
We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?
And this is what happened, praise be to Allah. The first time it happened was in the Battle of Badr, when their leaders, elders, and chiefs gathered, between nine hundred and one thousand men, against three hundred and a few dozen men with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And they were defeated, praise be to Allah, with the worst defeat, and the news spread about them, and twenty-four of their leaders were thrown into a well of Badr, a foul and stinking well. And this is certainly the worst defeat. For this reason he said:
[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].
In the Hereafter:
But the Hour is their appointment
And the Hour will be more severe and more bitter
Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said what will happen to them and those like them, so He said:
Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness.
And it is possible that His saying:
in error
The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces
And it is said:
Taste the touch of Saqar."
Then is he who will shield with his face the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection
The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces
And it is said:
Taste the touch of Saqar."
Taste the touch of Saqar."
Then He said, (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
Everything is by decree - even incapacity and ability
And in this noble verse is evidence that the human being is created by Allah the Exalted, and that his actions are created by Allah, and that everything has been decreed and finished. And if that is so, to whom does the human being turn when he is afflicted with hardship?
To Allah the Creator. And if he wants ease, he also turns to Allah the Creator. Let him not boast and be pleased with himself if he is afflicted with distress, and let him not despair if he is afflicted with distress. For the matter is in the hand of Allah. For this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The strong believer is better than the weak believer
But the intended meaning of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) "the strong" is: in his faith and his will. As for the strength of the body, it is for you or against you.
He said:
And in both is good
The strong believer is better than the weak believer
المؤمن القويّ خير من المؤمن الضّعيفand in both is good
Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought
Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward]
And Allah the Exalted said:
Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]
A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in everyone, (but) cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart
He said:
If something befalls you, do not say, "If I had done such and such, then such and such would have happened," but say, "It is the decree of Allah,"—meaning this is the decree of Allah—and what He willed has happened. For "if" opens the work of Satan
The important thing is that everything is by divine decree, even weakness and strength. So whoever Allah has decreed guidance for, it is by decree, and whoever Allah has decreed misery for, it is by decree. But what is the cause of Allah decreeing misery for the servant?
It is the servant himself, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
He said:
And Our command is but one
Like the flash of the eye
Like the blink of an eye
Be, and it is.
Look at what is greater than that: the dead in their graves, the insects, the animals, and all things are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection with one word, as He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
It will not be but one blast, and at once they are all brought present before Us.
And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.
Then He (Mighty and Majestic) said
And We have already destroyed your kinds
The questioner : Time for questions.
The Shaykh : Questions?
Good, we stop at this noble verse, and we ask Allah to make the Qur'an an intercessor for us and for you with Him on the Day of Resurrection.

To the questions now, we start with the oath.
