What is the meaning of al-Zuhri's statement in the previous chapter: "Al-Zuhri said: Hind had buttons on her sleeves between her fingers"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... before the chapter that ... the eighth hadith.

The Shaykh : Al-Zuhri said. Yes, yes, that is right.
Al-Zuhri said: "And Hind had buttons on her sleeves between her fingers". This indicates that it was the custom of women in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) not to expose their hands. Therefore, she had buttons on her sleeve between her fingers, because the sleeve was wide, and she would button it between her fingers so that the hand would not come out. The Shaykh al-Islam said: But this is outside the house. As for inside the house, it was their custom for the woman to expose her hands and for the garment to reach the wrist inside the house. By this, we know what some women have misunderstood from the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
No woman should look at the nakedness of another woman, and no man should look at the nakedness of another man. لا تنظر المرأة إلى عورة المرأة ولا الرجل إلى عورة الرجل
Sunan Ibn Majah 661Sahih (Darussalam)
, namely that it is permissible for a woman to remain with her body exposed except for what is between the navel and the knee. This is certainly a mistaken understanding. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A woman does not look لا تنظر المرأة
. And the prohibition of looking does not imply that everything else must be exposed, because it is possible that the woman is wearing a garment over her whole body, and her 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) is exposed either by the wind, or because she is lying down and her garment opens, or something similar. Here, the prohibition applies to the woman. Is it not applied to the woman who is wearing clothes, or to the woman who is looking?

The questioner : The one who is looking.

The Shaykh : It applies to the woman who is looking. By this, we know that this understanding is wrong. It is a mistaken understanding, and no Muslim says that it is permissible for Muslim women for a woman to go out among women wearing nothing but what covers what is between the navel and the knee, with her entire body exposed, her breasts, her back, her belly, and everything. No one says this. I even think that disbelieving women do not do this except rarely.
The point is that there is a difference between clothing and what is not permissible to see of a woman in relation to her sister. If a woman is wearing clothes and a cloak and everything, we tell the other woman: do not look at her 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered). And the fact that she is prohibited from looking at the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) does not imply that everything else must be exposed except for the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered).
The important thing is that this indicates the eagerness of the women of the Companions to prevent their hands from coming out. Even a woman with wide sleeves would put buttons on them, yes? Buttons to button them. As for what appears to be the majority, they wear gloves. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited a woman in ihram (the consecrated state of pilgrimage) from wearing gloves, which indicates that wearing them was their custom. Otherwise, the prohibition would have no benefit. If women did not wear them, the non-wearing would already exist and would not need to be prohibited. Yes.
