What is your guidance regarding the hadiths of hope, such as the hadith of the card, along with the other hadiths that state that the sinners must be punished?

The questioner : Your Eminence, regarding the hadith that was narrated about the man whom Allah will save on the Day of Resurrection, bestowing His favor upon him and delivering him, who had ninety-nine registers of sins and transgressions placed in one scale, and then the card containing the testimony that there is no god but Allah was brought, and the card outweighed the registers.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : The hadith is in *Sunan al-Tirmidhi*. What is your guidance regarding this hadith, along with the other well-known hadiths that state that the sinners must be punished in Hellfire, even though they all say: There is no god but Allah?
And also the second part: Is it appropriate to present this hadith and the other hadiths of hope to the common people, or is clarification necessary?

The Shaykh : As for the first point: We must know that if a person is a believer, even if his faith is weak, we do not assert that he will enter the Fire, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[An-Nisa 4:48]
. So this man who had perfect tawhid, which is the testimony that there is no god but Allah, this complete sincerity prevented him from eternal abode in the Fire and made it possible that Allah would forgive him, as in the verse:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[An-Nisa 4:48]
. And this verse, as you know, was mentioned twice in Surat al-Nisa.
And as for the hadiths of hope, like this hadith and others, is it appropriate to recite them to the common people? The answer is: It is appropriate to recite them to the common people with one of two conditions:
Either their meaning is explained to the common people.
Or the hadiths of warning are mentioned along with them, so that hope does not predominate over them, causing them to fall into security from the plot of Allah, and fear does not predominate, causing them to fall into despair from the mercy of Allah. For this reason, 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said a good word, he said:
You will not tell a people a story that their minds cannot grasp except that it will be a trial for some of them. إنك لن تحدث قوما حديثا لا تبلغه عقولهم إلا كان لبعضهم فتنة
. So it is obligatory for a person, when mentioning such hadiths, to explain and clarify them. Yes.
