The reciter: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us, saying: I heard 'Uqbah ibn Harith say:
I heard Ibn 'Umar narrate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The night prayer is in pairs of two. When you see that the dawn is about to overtake you, complete it with a single unit." It was said to Ibn 'Umar: What does 'in pairs of two' mean? He said: That one says the closing salam after every two units. سمعت ابن عمر يحدث أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم قال: صلاة الليل مثنى مثنى فإذا رأيت أن الصبح يدركك فأوتر بواحدة، فقيل لابن عمر: ما مثنى مثنى؟ قال: أن يسلّم في كل ركعتين
