Benefits of the Hadith: (… then he prayed two light rak'ahs, then he prayed two long rak'ahs, long, long, long, then he prayed two rak'ahs which were shorter than the two before them.)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In this hadith there are benefits, or rather a benefit, which is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to take into account his energy. So at first he would begin by lengthening the prayer, praying two long rak'ahs, long, long, long. Then he would begin to lighten it, because that is what is fitting for the body. For when one first enters the prayer, one is energetic, and then afterwards fatigue overtakes one. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) treated his body with this treatment, the gentlest of the gentle.
And in it is also the fact that the rak'ahs before the witr are not part of the witr, due to his saying afterwards:
Then he made the witr ثم أوتر
, "With how many rak'ahs do you make the witr?"
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : With one rak'ah, yes.
