The reciter: And Hārūn ibn Sa‘īd al-A‘lī told me, “‘Abd Allāh ibn Wahb told us, Ibn Jurayj informed us from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Kathīr ibn al-Muttab that he heard Muḥammad ibn Qays say, ‘I heard ‘Ā’ishah narrate, and she said:
Shall I not tell you about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and myself? We said, Yes.
ألا أحدثكم عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وعني قلنا بلى
And the one who heard Ḥajjāj al-A‘war told me, and the wording is his, saying, “Ḥajjāj ibn Muḥammad told us, Ibn Jurayj told us, ‘Abd Allāh, a man from Quraysh, informed me from Muḥammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah ibn al-Muttab that he said one day
Shall I not tell you about myself and my mother? We thought he meant his birth mother. He said, ‘Ā’ishah said: Shall I not tell you about myself and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? We said, Yes. He said, She said: When it was my night, the night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with me, he turned over, placed his cloak, took off his sandals, and put them by my feet. He spread the end of his garment over his bed and lay down. He did not stay long except until he thought I had fallen asleep. Then he took his cloak slowly, put on his sandals slowly, opened the door, and went out, then closed it slowly. I put my cloak over my head, veiled myself, and covered myself with my garment, then I followed in his footsteps until he reached al-Baqī‘. He stood and prolonged his standing, then raised his hands three times, then turned away. I turned away, he hurried, I hurried, he ran, I ran, he walked quickly, I walked quickly, I outpaced him, and I entered. No sooner had I lain down than he entered and said, What is the matter, O ‘Ā’ishah? A rough, bumpy path? She said, I said, Nothing. He said, You will tell me, or the Subtle, the Aware will tell me. She said, I said, O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom, and I told him. He said, You are the darkness I saw before me. I said, Yes. Then he struck me on the chest with a blow that pained me, then said, Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would be unjust to you? She said, Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it. Yes. He said, Jibrīl came to me when I saw you and called me, so I concealed it from you. I answered him, so I concealed it from you. He did not enter upon you because you had put on your clothes and I thought you had fallen asleep, so I disliked to wake you and feared you would be startled. He said, Your Lord commands you to go to the people of al-Baqī‘ and seek forgiveness for them. She said, I said, How should I say to them, O Messenger of Allah? He said, Say: Peace be upon the people of these dwellings from among the believers and the Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on those of us who went before and those who come after, and indeed we, if Allah wills, are to join you.
