When he arrived in al-Madinah, he met some people from al-Madinah who forbade him from doing so and informed him that six men had intended to do this during the lifetime of the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them and said: "Do you not have in me an example to follow?" When they told him about this, he went back to his wife, whom he had divorced, and bore witness to taking her back. Then he went to Ibn 'Abbas and asked him about the witr prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Ibn 'Abbas said: "Shall I direct you to the person on earth who knows best about the witr prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Who is it?" He said: "A'ishah. Go to her and ask her, then come back to me and tell me her response to you." So he went to her. He passed by Hakim ibn Aflah and asked him to accompany him to her. Hakim said: "I am not going to be near her, because I forbade her from saying anything about these two groups, but she refused to do anything but speak about them." He said: "So I insisted on him, and he came." We went to A'ishah and asked permission to enter, and she gave us permission, so we entered upon her. She said: "Is it Hakim?" He recognized her, and she said: "Who is with you?" He said: "Sa'd ibn Hisham." She said: "Which Hisham?" He said: "The son of 'Amir." She showed compassion for him and spoke well of him. Qatadah said: "He was wounded on the Day of Uhud." I said: "O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "Do you not read the Qur'an?" I said: "Yes." She said: "The character of the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an." I was about to stand up and not ask anyone about anything until I died, but then it occurred to me, so I said: "Tell me about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "Do you not read: 'O you who wraps himself in clothing'?" I said: "Yes." She said: "Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made the night prayer obligatory in the beginning of this surah, so the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions stood in prayer for it, and Allah withheld the end of it for twelve months in the heavens until Allah revealed the easing in the end of this surah, so the night prayer became voluntary after being obligatory." I said: "O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the witr prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." She said: "We used to prepare his toothpick and water for ablution, and Allah would send him to wake up whenever He willed to wake him up at night. He would not sit in them except in the eighth, where he would remember Allah, praise Him, and supplicate to Him, then he would stand up without saying the taslim, then he would stand and pray the ninth, then sit and remember Allah, praise Him, and supplicate to Him, then he would say the taslim in a way that we could hear it.
