The Book of Hajj-09a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna, and Ibn Bashshar, both narrated to us from Ibn Abi 'Adi. Ibn al-Muthanna said: Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated to us from Shu'bah from Qatadah from Abu Hasan from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) observed the Zuhr prayer at Dhu'l-Hulaifa; then called for his she-camel and marked it on the right side of its bump, removed the blood from it, and tied two sandals round its neck. He then mounted his camel, and when it brought him up to al-Baida', he pronounced Talbiya for the Pilgrimage.
Sahih Muslim 1243a

The Shaykh : And this marking (ish'ar) undoubtedly causes harm to the animal, but it became permissible for the sake of benefit, just as branding (wasm) became permissible, which is burning with fire for the sake of benefit. This burning with fire is a religious and worldly benefit. Branding is a religious benefit if it is for the camels of charity, the camels of the public treasury, and the like. It is a worldly benefit if it is for the camels of the wealth that a person keeps.
As for marking (ish'ar), it is not to be done except as a religious sign that this is a sacrificial animal (hady).
