The Book of Marriage, Breastfeeding, Divorce, Mutual Oath-Swearing, and Manumission-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: I read to Malik from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from Ummara, who said that Aisha informed her:
that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was with her and she heard the voice of a man asking permission to enter the room of Hafsa. A'isha said that she had said, "Messenger of Allah! There is a man asking permission to enter your house!" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I think it is so-and-so" (referring to a paternal uncle of Hafsa by suckling). A'isha said, "Messenger of Allah! If so-and-so were alive (referring to her paternal uncle by suckling) could he enter where I am?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Yes. Suckling makes haram as birth makes haram."
Muwatta Malik 30:1
.

The Shaykh : Breastfeeding resembles blood kinship in some matters and differs from it in most matters. Inheritance does not apply through it, nor does the obligation of blood money, nor financial maintenance, nor maintaining family ties, nor anything else. It differs from blood kinship in most of its issues, but it agrees with it in some issues. The conditions for this will be explained, if Allah wills. But what is the ruling regarding prohibition? The ruling is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Breastfeeding forbids what birth forbids.”
