What is the ruling on using perfumes that contain alcohol?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : There has been disagreement in the reports from you regarding the ruling on perfumes and their use, so what is the ruling in that matter? What are the perfumes, Ya Gazi?

The questioner : Colonia, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Colonia, may Allah reward you. In terms of purity, it is pure, because the original substance of khamr (intoxicants) is not impure. In terms of use, drinking it to the point of intoxication is forbidden, there is no doubt about that. And whoever uses it on the exterior of his body or his clothing to perfume himself, I do not forbid it, but I do not use it. I do not forbid it because Allah said:
so avoid it that you may be successful. (91) Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling فاجتنبوه لعلكم تفلحون إنما يريد الشيطان ليوقع بينكم العداوة والبغضاء في الخمر والميسر
[Al-Ma'idah 5:90-91]
, and this cause does not apply to one who anoints himself with it, it only applies to one who drinks it. But I leave it off out of scrupulousness, fearing the generality of His saying:
So avoid it فاجتنبوه
, do you understand?

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Even if it is ninety-nine percent alcohol and one percent oil, because alcohol is not impure. And Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) explicitly stated the permissibility of treating oneself with the oil of forbidden animals if it is applied by rubbing on the exterior of the skin, meaning, and one purifies oneself from it when intending to pray, meaning he distinguishes between eating and drinking and external use. But whoever leaves it off out of scrupulousness, nothing is required of him, if Allah wills.
