The Book of Faith-06b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions
Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Abu Kuraib narrated to us, saying: Ibn Numayr narrated to us. And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, both, narrated to us from Jarir. And Abu Kuraib narrated to us, and Abu Usamah narrated to us, all of them from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from his father, from Sufyan ibn 'Abd Allah al-Thaqafi, who said: I said:
Messenger of God, say something about Islam concerning which I shall need to ask no one after you are gone.” (A version has "anyone else”.) He said, "Say, ‘I believe in God’, then keep to the straight path.” يا رسول الله ، قل لي في الإسلام قولًا لا أسأل عنه أحدًا بعدك وفي حديث أبي أسامة غيرك قال : قل : آمنت بالله ، فاستقم
Mishkat al-Masabih 15Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This hadith is comprehensive, where the man, Sufyan ibn 'Abd Allah al-Thaqafi, asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to tell him about Islam a word that he would not ask anyone else about. So he said to him:
Say: I have believed in Allah. قل آمنت بالله
This is the work of the heart, the speech of the heart, and its affirmation.
Then be steadfast ثم استقم
means: upon the religion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. فأقم وجهك للدين حنيفًا
[Ar-Rum 30:30]
And He said:
so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness استقيموا إليه واستغفروه
[Fussilat 41:6]
This is the foundation upon which all of Islam revolves: faith, which is in the heart, and uprightness, which is in the limbs. And be upright upon what? Be upright upon the Shari'ah of Allah, do not deviate from it to the right or to the left. This is a comprehensive word, but in reality it is general, except that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept it general because the legislations, praise be to Allah, are known and clarified in the Book and the Sunnah.
