Some commentators, when they come to mention this Bedouin, name him and then say he is from the rough folk of the desert. Is he not a Companion? How can this be said of him?

The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner : Shaykh, some of the researchers (may Allah have mercy on them), when they come to mention the hadith of the Bedouin, state that he is so-and-so ibn so-and-so, and that he is from the rough folk of the desert.

The Shaykh : What? That he is?

The questioner : And that he is from the rough folk of the desert. This is considered a Companion, is he not?

The Shaykh : And what does he say?

The questioner : It is mentioned in the hadith that a Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : For example, it is mentioned that he is so-and-so ibn so-and-so, and that he is from the rough folk of the desert. Do you know this Bedouin?

The Shaykh : Does it cause any harm, I mean, naming him?

The questioner : Naming him, I mean, saying he is from the rough folk of the desert.

The Shaykh : Huh? From the rough folk of what? Yes, that is right.

The questioner : And he is a Companion.

The Shaykh : In any case, if he said it, Allah the Exalted said:
The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what الأعراب أشدّ كفرًا ونفاقًا وأجدر ألاّ يعلموا حدود ما أنزل الله
[At-Tawbah 9:97]
But it is undoubtedly better not to describe a Companion as rough, but there is no harm in it.

The questioner : Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes.
