The questioner : This message reached us from the listener, your sister in Islam, Umm 'Ammar. A woman said on one occasion, “I forbid myself from riding in airplanes, just as the Fire is forbidden to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him),” and then the health circumstances of her son necessitated traveling abroad. What is the ruling on this in Islam? Does she travel and pay the expiation for her oath, or not? What is the Shaykh’s opinion, may Allah grant him understanding?

The Shaykh : We say that she travels and pays the expiation for her oath.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (2) Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل الله لك تبتغي مرضات أزواجك والله غفور رحيم قد فرض الله لكم تحلة أيمانكم
[At-Tahrim 66:1-2]
Thus, Allah the Exalted clarified that forbidding what Allah has made lawful is an oath, and that it is dissolved by the expiation for an oath:
Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths قد فرض الله لكم تحلة أيمانكم
[At-Tahrim 66:2]
.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And Allah the Exalted named it an oath. Accordingly, she pays the expiation for her oath and rides in the airplane.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
