The questioner : His final question says: My father passed away, and he used to leave some of the prayer times. Please advise me on what I should do. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : You must seek forgiveness for him, for this is part of being dutiful to him, and he is in need of seeking forgiveness and asking for repentance on his behalf in this state, because he left the prayer. Leaving the prayer is never permissible, even if a person is suffering from the most severe illness, as long as his mind is with him, it is obligatory for him to pray according to his ability. Even if he could not pray except by intention, the prayer is still obligatory upon him. As for what some of the common people do, where if they fall ill with a severe illness they leave the prayer and say, "When we get better, we will pray," this is incorrect. How do they know that they will get better? It often happens, frequently, that a person dies before he recovers. Therefore, the Muslim must pray the obligatory prayer in its time, wherever he is and in whatever form he is able, according to his capacity, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So fear Allah as much as you are able فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
It is permissible for a sick person, if he is in his home town, to combine the two prayers of Zuhr and 'Asr, and the two prayers of Maghrib and 'Isha', if leaving the combination would cause him hardship. If he is outside his home town, for example, if he is in a hospital outside his town, then he may combine and also shorten the prayers, because he is a traveler.
