The Shaykh : Then we return to the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Nothing interrupt prayer لا يقطع الصلاة شيء
Sunan Abi Dawud 719Da'if (Al-Albani)
The word "prayer" is in the accusative case. How can it be in the accusative case when it follows the verb? It is known that the doer is in the nominative case. Yes, Adam?
The student: It is the object of the verb.

The Shaykh : It is the object of the verb! It follows the verb, man! Yes?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : I am saying now that it follows the verb. How do you say it is the object of the verb when it follows the verb? Does the object of the verb come before the doer?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Do you have a witness from the Qur'an?
The student: Many.

The Shaykh : We need one from the many.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Well done, perfect. So, "prayer" is a fronted object,
Nothing interrupt prayer لا يقطع الصّلاة شيء
Sunan Abi Dawud 719Da'if (Al-Albani)
and "thing" is an indefinite noun in the context of negation, so it generalizes to every thing,
and ward off what you are able to وادرأوا ما استطعتم
meaning, ward off whoever wants to pass by as much as you are able. So here there are two rulings: The first is that nothing breaks the prayer. Any thing that passes by does not break it: a woman, a man, a donkey, a dog, a camel, a sheep, any thing.
The second ruling is warding off
ward off what you are able to ادرأوا ما استطعتم
, and this generalizes to warding off everyone who wants to pass in front of the one praying, whether it breaks the prayer or not. And the hadith, as the author (may Allah have mercy on him) says, "It was narrated by Abu Dawud, and there is weakness in its chain". Therefore, no ruling is established by it as long as it is weak, and it has not come from multiple paths that support it until it reaches the level of hasan (good). If it is weak, it is not acted upon unless it comes from multiple paths that compensate for its weakness until it reaches the level of hasan. And if we assume that it is authentic, either authentic in itself or hasan due to other evidence, then it is said to be general. The hadiths regarding the breaking of the prayer in the case of the black dog, the woman, and the donkey are specific. The specification of the general is found frequently in the Book and the Sunnah. Do you understand now?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : And based on this, we say that this hadith is weak. And if it is authentic, it is general, specified by the hadiths indicating that the passing of the black dog, the woman, and the donkey breaks the prayer.
