All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on teaching the dying person to say 'There is no god but Allah.' It was narrated from Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3116Sahih (Al-Albani) Abu Dawud and al-Hakim narrated it, and al-Hakim said: The chain of narration is authentic. It was also narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1444Sahih (Darussalam) Muslim narrated it".

The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on teaching the dying person to say 'There is no god but Allah'". The dying person is one whose time has come for the angels to take his soul. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has assigned angels to guard man during his life and after his death. Allah the Exalted said:[Ar-Ra'd 13:11] And Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: [Al-An'am 6:61] When a person's time comes, the angels descend to him to take his soul from the hand of the Angel of Death, who is in charge of taking it from the body. If the person is among the believers, the angels are with him a shroud from Paradise and embalming from Paradise, may Allah make me and you among them. But if he is among the disbelievers, the angels of punishment are with him a shroud from the Fire and embalming from the Fire, we seek refuge in Allah from that. So when a person is dying and we know that he is in the throes of death and that he is going to die, we teach him to say "There is no god but Allah," as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, which he narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1444Sahih (Darussalam) The scholars said: Teach him gently; do not command him by saying "Say 'There is no god but Allah,'" because if he is in that state, his chest may become constricted and the world may become narrow for him. Perhaps if he is told "Say 'There is no god but Allah,'" he will say "No," because you cannot imagine the constriction of the chest at that hour unless you are in that state. We ask Allah to expand our chests and yours when meeting Him. So remind him of Allah; say "There is no god but Allah" and raise your voice with this so that he hears it, for perhaps Allah will bestow upon him and he will be present-minded when you teach him, and he will say "There is no god but Allah." If he says "There is no god but Allah" and it is his last word from this world, he will enter Paradise, as in the hadith of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mishkat al-Masabih 1621 The people of knowledge said: If he says "There is no god but Allah," let him be silent; do not teach him again or say anything. If he returns to himself and speaks something, such as saying "Give me water" or "Give me drink," or speaks something else, then repeat the teaching; say "There is no god but Allah" until he hears it, so that perhaps it will be his last word from this world: "There is no god but Allah." But if the person, may Allah protect us, is a disbeliever or an apostate, then perhaps we say "Say 'There is no god but Allah'" and command him, because he is a disbeliever. If Allah bestows upon him and he says "There is no god but Allah," that is what is desired. If not, he is a disbeliever. Therefore, when Abu Talib was dying, and Abu Talib was the uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the uncles of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) who reached the message were four: two embraced Islam and two died upon disbelief. Of those who embraced Islam, one was better than the other: Hamzah and al-Abbas; Hamzah was better than al-Abbas. And of those who died upon disbelief, one was uglier in disbelief than the other: Abu Talib, the father of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Abu Lahab. Abu Lahab, may Allah protect us, was among the most severe people in harming the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). For this reason, Allah revealed a complete surah in his condemnation, which people recite in the obligatory and voluntary prayers: [Al-Masad 111:1-5] In the case of the uncle of the Messenger, a complete surah was revealed in his disparagement and condemnation and the explanation of his punishment, because he was among the most hostile and harmful people to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). As for Abu Talib, he was a disbeliever, but he had care for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), tenderness, compassion, defense, and praise of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). However, may Allah protect us, he was prevented from Islam. His death approached, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was with him, along with two men from Quraysh. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Sahih al-Bukhari 3884 But these two men were bad companions; they said to him: "Do you desire to turn away from the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" And it seems, may Allah know best, that they saw him about to say "There is no god but Allah," so they said to him: "Do you desire to turn away from the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" When he said this word, arrogance took him in sin, and he said: "I am upon the religion of Abd al-Muttalib." And his last word was a word of shirk, may Allah protect us, so he died. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said that he interceded for him with Allah, and he interceded for him, so the punishment was lightened for him, and he was in a shallow part of the Fire, having sunk into this shallow part, with two sandals on him from which his brain boiled. Two sandals from the Fire from which his brain boiled, may Allah protect us. And his brain is the farthest thing from his feet, so if it boils like a pot with fire under the water, what do you think of what is lower from his head to his feet? It will be more severe. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 3883 The point of this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him: Sahih al-Bukhari 4675 and he did not just mention Allah with him, but he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 4675 This is among the best of what can be and the most noble of what can be: a gift for a person when he teaches his brother at death to say "There is no god but Allah." This is worth the whole world. So if you come to someone whose time has come, strive to teach him "There is no god but Allah," in obedience to the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and as kindness to this person. Perhaps Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will teach you "There is no god but Allah" at your death, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1425Sahih (Darussalam) May Allah seal for us and for you with the testimony of faith.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
