The questioner : His third question asks: Is it permissible for me to give a share of the zakat of my wealth to each of my brother, my sister, my paternal uncle, my paternal aunt, my maternal uncle, or my maternal aunt, given that they are not poor or needy in the true sense?
The Shaykh : It is not permissible for you to give any of the zakat to these people if they are not among those eligible for zakat. Nor is it permissible for you to give any of the zakat to anyone else if they are not among those eligible for zakat. However, you should give to your relatives from your own wealth as a means of maintaining family ties and being dutiful to them. Indeed, Allah the Exalted has made clear in the Qur'an the virtue of maintaining family ties and has made clear the punishment for severing them. So, maintaining your relatives' ties through what is customary, whether by money, service, or status, is a requirement prescribed by the Shari'ah. As for giving them a right they do not deserve from the zakat, that is forbidden for you and does not suffice you.
