Some people turn to reading the Sunnah and say that the people of innovation rely on the generalities of the Qur'an and the Sunnah to clarify these generalities.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student: Some people abandon tafsir (exegesis) and follow the Sunnah and the reports of the men (Companions and Successors), saying: "The people of innovation rely on the generalities of the Qur'an, and we read the Sunnah to clarify these generalities with the Sunnah." What is your opinion?

The Shaykh : My opinion is that it is correct that we do not disdain the Sunnah, nor the knowledge of the men, nor the knowledge of the terminology, but we see that there are priorities, and there are more important matters before the less important ones. As for what he claimed, that the Qur'an did not clarify the refutation of the people of innovation and the Sunnah did, this is incorrect. The Qur'an does not contain a single piece of evidence for any of the innovations, ever. In fact, the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book"Dar' Ta'arud al-'Aql wa al-Naql"he said:"Any evidence a person uses to argue for an innovation, I make that evidence an argument against him"and he spoke the truth.
I give you an example:
Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision لا تدركه الأبصار وهو يدرك الأبصار
[Al-An'am 6:103]
Those who believe that Allah is not seen use this verse as evidence, whereas the truth is that it indicates that Allah is seen. They use it as evidence, but it is actually evidence against them, because denying the specific necessitates the existence of the general.
The eyes do not comprehend Him لا تدركه
So, you see Him. If it were that they do not see Him, it would have said "the eyes do not see Him." But to express "they do not perceive Him" instead of "they do not see Him" is undoubtedly obfuscation and riddling. It cannot be in the speech of Allah, whom Allah made a clarification for everything.
They used the statement of Musa (Moses):
My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allah] said, "You will not see Me رب أرني أنظر إليك قال لن تراني
[Al-A'raf 7:143]
They said: This indicates that Allah is not seen. We say: This is evidence against you. Did Musa (Moses) ask to see [Allah] in the Hereafter or in this world? In this world. How do you transfer it to the Hereafter? For this reason, He said:
you will not see Me لن تراني
Meaning, you do not have the ability to bear seeing Me now. Seeing Allah the Exalted is impossible in this world, not for a reason related to the seeing, but for a reason related to the seer. The seer cannot bear it. For this reason, Allah gave an example for Musa (Moses) and said:
but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared to the mountain انظر إلى الجبل فإن استقر مكانه فسوف تراني فلما تجلى ربه للجبل
[Al-A'raf 7:143]
(Exalted and Majestic is He). What happened?
He made it crumble جعله دكا
This great mountain, which bombs cannot crush, became crushed the moment Allah manifested Himself to it. For this reason, Musa (Moses) fell unconscious. He was unable to bear the situation, let alone seeing his Lord, Mighty and Majestic. So, the important point is that the verse now contains evidence against them, because Musa (Moses) asked to see [Allah] in this world, not in the Hereafter.
Moreover, Musa (Moses) asked to see [Allah], and you say that seeing Allah is impossible. So, you are more knowledgeable about Allah than Musa (Moses). This means either that you are more knowledgeable about Allah than Musa (Moses), because Musa (Moses) did not ask for something impossible; he believed that Allah is seen, but humans cannot bear it. So, either he was ignorant of the power of Allah and you are knowledgeable about it, or he was transgressing against Allah by asking for what he was not permitted to ask.
So I tell you, my brothers, whoever says that innovations cannot be refuted except by the Sunnah, or that their refutation is not completed except by the Sunnah, has erred. This indicates a deficiency in his understanding of the Qur'an or a shortcoming in his comprehension of the Qur'an. Otherwise, the Qur'an itself cannot have an innovation without a refutation for it, ever. Even if there were nothing else, there is His saying:
who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented شرعوا لهم من الدين ما لم يأذن به الله
[Ash-Shuraa 42:21]
This verse is decisive against every innovation. Every innovation is invalidated by this verse, whether it is doctrinal, verbal, or practical.
