The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Say: I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is one God. So be upright to Him and seek His forgiveness. And woe to the associators.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this verse is the obligation for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform his ummah (the Muslim community) that he is a human being like them, as indicated by his saying:
Say, "I am only a man قل إنما أنا بشر
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
.
Another benefit is the emphasis on this notification, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to convey it in a specific manner. The entire Qur'an was commanded to be conveyed by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)
O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord
[Al-Ma'idah 5:67]
, but sometimes verses pass by in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is commanded to convey them specifically by their own wording. This serves as evidence of the care taken with them and their importance. This is common, such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision
[An-Nur 24:30]
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision
[An-Nur 24:31]
and the like. This constitutes a special recommendation to convey it, indicating care and attention to it. Do you understand this or not? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to convey the entire Qur'an, the evidence being
O Apostle Muhammad! Proclaim (the Message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord
Sahih al-Bukhari 7531
. In some verses, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is commanded to convey them in a specific way, saying: “Say so-and-so.” This indicates what? It indicates care and attention to them, and that they have a special status. Here he said:
Say, "I am only a man like you قل إنما أنا بشر مثلكم
[Al-Kahf 18:110]

Among the benefits of this noble verse is the refutation of those who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was created from light, as indicated by his saying:
I am only a man like you
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
.
Another benefit is the refutation of those who said that he is light and that he has no shadow when walking in the sun, so that he would not have a shadow. The point is establishing his humanity through similarity
Say, "I am only a man like you قل إنما أنا بشر مثلكم
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
. Therefore, any hadiths that come with such matters that would cause the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to fall outside the scope of humanity are fabricated and false, because he is a human being like us.
Among its benefits is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is subject to heat, cold, hunger, thirst, fear, security, and other necessities of humanity, due to the generality of his saying:
I am only a man like you
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
. Look at the establishment of humanity through similarity, so that no one says: “This is metaphorical.” He emphasized this humanity through similarity.
Another benefit is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) does not know the unseen except what is revealed to him, because we do not know the unseen, and he is a human being like us.
Among its benefits is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not possess the power to benefit or harm himself or others. The point is that he is like us, and since we do not possess the power to benefit or harm ourselves or others, so it is with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
Among its benefits is that the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is a real death, and that with his death his deeds were cut off, except for the reward of the good deeds of his ummah (the Muslim community) that reaches him, as indicated by his saying:
I am only a man like you
[Al-Kahf 18:110]
. Similarity requires equality in every aspect, except where evidence specifies otherwise. With this, the hope of everyone who asks the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to intercede for them, standing at his grave and saying: “O Messenger of Allah, intercede for me,” is cut off. For this is not permissible, because it is an overreach in supplication, as the person asks for what is not his right and what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cannot do, because he has died, and when the son of Adam dies, his deeds are cut off, not by supplication or otherwise.
Among the benefits of this verse is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) may forget, because this is a necessity of humanity, as established in his saying:
Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget.
Sahih Muslim 572j
.
Among its benefits is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) exercises ijtihad (independent legal reasoning) and may err in his ijtihad, because this is a necessity of humanity, as is the case in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.
[At-Tawbah 9:43]
and in His saying:
(2) Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (3) But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (4) Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? (5) As for he who thinks himself without need, (6) To him you give attention. (7) And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (8) But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] (9) While he fears [Allah], (10) From him you are distracted.
['Abasa 80:2-10]
. However, he (peace and blessings be upon him) is distinguished from others in that he is not left in error, even if it is due to ijtihad, unlike others who may not be reminded and may not remember when they forget, or may not be taught and may not know when they are ignorant. That is, our errors may continue without us being alerted to them or becoming aware of them. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot be left in error, nor can he be left in forgetting what is obligatory; rather, he must become aware or be alerted.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the establishment of the prophethood of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), which is taken from his saying:
It is revealed to him يوحى إليه
. Because revelation (wahy) does not occur except for a prophet. If someone asks: “How do you say that revelation does not occur except for a prophet, when Allah the Exalted revealed to other than humans, as He said:
And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses وأوحى ربك إلى النحل أن اتخذي من الجبال بيوتًا
[An-Nahl 16:68]
and He said regarding other than the prophets:
And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river وأوحَيْنا إلى أم موسى أن أرضعيه فإذا خفت عليه فألقيه في اليم
[Al-Qasas 28:7]
?” We say: This objection only applies to those who do not distinguish between the meanings of revelation. As for those who distinguish between them and say that revelation is either with legislation or without it: if it is with legislation, this does not occur except for messengers or prophets. If it is without legislation, it is from the category of inspiration. So the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And your Lord inspired to the bee
means He inspired them to take the mountains as dwellings, and so on. Similarly,
We revealed to the mother of Musa
means revelation of inspiration. And with this, the objection is resolved.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the importance of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), as He restricted revelation to tawhid.
