The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Nothing is said to you except what was said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is the One of forgiveness and the One of painful punishment.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In this noble verse: there is consolation for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), because when he knew that what was said to him had also been said to the messengers before him, the matter became easier for him.
Among its benefits is that the Sunnah of Allah the Exalted is one; the statement of the deniers is one and their action is one, as He said:
except what was already said to the messengers before you إلا ما قد قيل للرسل من قبلك
[Fussilat 41:43]
.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the affirmation of the attribute of forgiveness for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), which is covering the sin and passing over it; this is forgiveness.
Among its benefits is the affirmation of the severity of His punishment, as He said:
a possessor of painful penalty. وذو عقاب أليم
[Fussilat 41:43]
.
Among its benefits is the mercy of Allah to the servants, where He presents to them what necessitates repentance so that they do not persist in His disobedience, as He said:
indeed, your Lord is full of forgiveness إن ربك لذو مغفرة
[Ar-Ra'd 13:6]
.
Among its benefits is that this Qur'an consists of repetitions; when the aspect of encouragement is mentioned in it, the aspect of warning is mentioned with it, so that the soul does not become greedy and excessive in greed, thereby feeling safe from the scheme of Allah. Thus, Allah the Exalted combines this and that so that a person does not hope for favor and feel safe from the scheme of Allah, and so that he does not fear and despair of the mercy of Allah. Accordingly, his journey to Allah the Exalted is between fear and hope. For this reason, Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is befitting for the one traveling to Allah the Exalted that his fear and his hope be equal; whichever one prevails, its owner is destroyed.” And some of them said: “It is befitting that fear and hope for a person be like the wings of a bird; if one of them falters, the bird falls.” Thus, hope and fear are one and equal; you hope and you fear. For this reason, He said:
they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration يدعون ربهم خوفًا وطمعًا
[As-Sajdah 32:16]
. Some scholars elaborated and said: “It is befitting for a person, when he does good deeds, that the aspect of hope be more dominant for him, because this is part of having a good opinion of Allah.” The point is that when Allah guided you to work, He has promised you reward; and when He guided you to supplication, He has promised you response. Therefore, if you do good, let the aspect of hope be dominant; and if you do evil or intend to do it, let the aspect of fear be dominant so that fear restrains you from persisting in evil or committing evil. This is an elaboration. Another elaboration: some took another path and said: In a state of health, one should let the aspect of fear be dominant, because the healthy person, to whom Allah has granted health in his body and mind, may persist in evil and not care. And when you are in illness, let the aspect of hope be dominant, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you should die but hoping only good from Allah لا يموتَنَّ أحدكم إلا وهو يُحسِن الظنَّ بربِّه
Sahih Muslim 2877c
because Allah the Exalted is in accordance with the good opinion of His servant of Him. And what should be said is: A person is the doctor of his own self. If he fears from himself persisting in sins and being negligent in acts of obedience, let him let the aspect of fear be dominant. And if he fears from himself arrogance, vanity, and feeling safe from the scheme of Allah, let him let the aspect of fear be dominant. In reality, a person is the doctor of his own self.
