The Shaykh : Among the benefits of the noble verse: [Ghafir 40:3] We mentioned the exhortation to repentance? Good.
Among its benefits: that the punishment of Allah the Exalted is severe, as He the Exalted said: And branching from this benefit is the fear of exposing oneself to His punishment, and Allah the Mighty and Majestic said to His Prophet: [Al-Hijr 15:49-50] And He said in another verse: [Al-Ma'idah 5:98] .
And among the benefits of the verse following it, in His saying:[Ghafir 40:3] is the clarification of the perfection of Allah's wealth, as He said: meaning His companion, and the long robe is wealth, as we have explained.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: the exclusivity of Allah the Exalted in divinity, as He said: And divinity, or the exclusivity of Allah the Exalted in divinity, is one of the three divisions of tawhid (the oneness of Allah), which are tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship), tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship), and tawhid al-asma' wa al-sifat (oneness of the names and attributes). It is called tawhid of worship; so with regard to the servant, it is tawhid of worship, and with regard to the one worshipped, it is tawhid of divinity.
Among the benefits of this noble verse: the clarification that there is no worshipped entity but Allah, is that so? Yes, we must qualify it to say there is no true worshipped entity but Allah, because there are things worshipped besides Allah that are called gods, and Allah the Exalted called them gods:[Al-Mu'minun 23:117] [Hud 11:101] but they are false gods.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: that the return is to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, as He said: .
And among the benefits of the noble verse: the obligation to refer to the Shari'ah of Allah, which is derived from His saying: where the news is placed first, and placing the news first indicates restriction and exclusivity.
And among the benefits of the noble verse: combining fear and hope in the journey to Allah. The aspect of this is that when a person knows that the return is to Allah, and that He is the Forgiver of sins, the Acceptor of repentance, and severe in punishment, he hopes from one aspect and fears from another. As long as the return is to One described thus, there is no doubt that he will hope at times and fear at others. Which of the two should prevail? Some scholars said: It is obligatory that his fear and hope be equal, so that hope does not prevail and he falls into security from the plot of Allah, and fear does not prevail and he falls into despair of the mercy of Allah, but rather his fear and hope should be equal. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: " It should be that his fear and hope are equal, for whichever prevails, its owner is destroyed ".
And some of them said: It should be that a person travels to Allah the Exalted like a bird with its two wings equal; if one of its wings tilts, it leans toward the side it tilted to. And some scholars said: In the aspect of obedience, the aspect of hope should prevail, and that Allah the Exalted accepts it; and in the aspect of disobedience, the aspect of fear should prevail so that he does not fall into it. So when he intends an evil deed, he remembers the severity of the punishment, fears, and is deterred. And when he does a good deed, he remembers the reward and recompense and the acceptance of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so the aspect of hope prevails.
And some scholars said: It should be that the aspect of fear prevails in a state of health, and the aspect of hope prevails in a state of illness, until death comes to him while he has a good opinion of Allah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2877c. So the opinions are four: that his fear and hope be equal; the second is that the aspect of hope prevails in good deeds and the aspect of fear when he intends disobedience; the third is that the aspect of hope prevails in a state of illness and the aspect of fear in a state of health, ... Good, so this is that his fear and hope be equal, good, these are three opinions, and what appears is that the opinion that the aspect of hope prevails in the state of doing obedience and the aspect of fear when he intends disobedience is the closest of the opinions, in order to deter himself when he intends disobedience out of fear of Allah, and to hope for acceptance from Allah and reward when he does obedience, so the aspect of hope prevails.
[Ghafir 40:3] And among the benefits of the noble verse: the exhortation to tawakkul (reliance upon Allah). How was it a proof for the exhortation to tawakkul upon Allah? ... That since the return is to Allah, it should be that a person attaches himself to his Lord and not to others. As long as the return is to Allah, rely on Allah and not on others.
And among the benefits of the noble verse also: turning to Allah the Exalted in times of hardship and when seeking what is loved. It is derived from? So if a hardship becomes severe for you, do not turn to Zayd or 'Amr; you must turn to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, even to hardships whose causes are hidden, for only Allah benefits you: [Fussilat 41:36].
The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance
غافر الذنب وقابل التوبAmong its benefits: that the punishment of Allah the Exalted is severe, as He the Exalted said:
Severe in punishment
شديد العقاب(49) [O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful. (50) And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
نبأ عبادي أني أنا الغفور الرحيم وأن عذابي هو العذاب الأليمKnow that Allah is severe in penalty and that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
اعلموا أن الله شديد العقاب وأن الله غفور رحيمAnd among the benefits of the verse following it, in His saying:
owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.
ذي الطول لا إله إلا هو إليه المصيرThe Owner of the long robe
ذي الطولAnd among the benefits of the noble verse: the exclusivity of Allah the Exalted in divinity, as He said:
There is no god but He
لا إله إلا هوAmong the benefits of this noble verse: the clarification that there is no worshipped entity but Allah, is that so? Yes, we must qualify it to say there is no true worshipped entity but Allah, because there are things worshipped besides Allah that are called gods, and Allah the Exalted called them gods:
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord
ومن يدع مع الله إلها آخر لا برهان له به فإنما حسابه عند ربهthey were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allah
فما أغنت عنهم آلهتهم التي يدعون من دون الله من شيءAnd among the benefits of the noble verse: that the return is to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, as He said:
To Him is the destination
إليه المصيرAnd among the benefits of the noble verse: the obligation to refer to the Shari'ah of Allah, which is derived from His saying:
