The Shaykh : There is a difference of opinion on this. Some scholars say: The legislation of those before us is legislation for us. And some say: No, the legislation of those before us was for them, and we have our own legislation, based on His saying: This issue has long branches and deep research in the principles of jurisprudence. It appears to me that the legislation of those before us which Allah revealed to us is legislation for us, because Allah did not reveal it to us in vain, but so that we may take a lesson. Then, if it was abrogated in our legislation, it was abrogated. Therefore, you will find scholars deriving many rulings from the stories of the Prophets. Our Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) has derived benefits from the story of Yusuf in a treatise.
