Commentary on Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And He, the Exalted, is too generous to repeat the punishment in the Hereafter

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The commentator said: "And He, the Exalted, is too generous to repeat the punishment in the Hereafter". His meaning, may Allah have mercy on him, is that the calamities that befall us because of our sins are sufficient as punishment for those sins; we will not be punished for them in the Hereafter. This is the apparent meaning of the verse, because his saying:
it is for what your hands have earned
[Ash-Shuraa 42:30]
indicates that this calamity is the punishment. If it is the punishment, then Allah will not repeat the punishment in the Hereafter, because He is too generous to repeat the punishment. This is correct: what a person suffers in this world is an expiation for his sins. If the hudud punishment is carried out against him for a sin that has a hadd, it is an expiation. If he is given a discretionary punishment for a sin that does not have a hadd, it is an expiation. If he is struck by a calamity because of these sins, it is an expiation. Therefore, Allah does not repeat the punishment in the Hereafter, except for one sin, which is spreading corruption on earth. Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
[Al-Ma'idah: 33]. This is an exception, due to the severity of this type of sin. Indeed, corruption on earth is not a trivial matter. So Allah made it so that these war-makers who spread corruption on earth have two punishments: the first is the cutting off of limbs, and the second is:
and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment, (34) Except for those who return
[Al-Ma'idah 5:33-34]
.
The commentator said: "As for those who are not sinners, what befalls them in this world is to raise their ranks in the Hereafter". This statement implies that there are many people who are not sinners. Yes, and upon reflection, this is questionable, because there is no person who does not commit a sin. Even the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would have pardoned them.
Sahih Muslim 2749
. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.
Sunan Ibn Majah 4251Hasan (Darussalam)
. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about himself:
O Allah. Forgive me all my sins, small and great, first and last. “ the narrator Ibn al-sarh added: “open and secret.” اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي كله دقه وجله علانيته وسره وأوله وآخره
Sunan Abi Dawud 878Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And Allah addressed His Prophet, saying:
(1) Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest (2) That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path
[Al-Fath 48:1-2]
. Can anyone dare to say that the Messenger did not sin, when Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow
[Al-Fath 48:2]
? It is impossible, because one cannot say he has no sin until Allah grants him forgiveness for it. Yes, the Messengers are protected from something that others are not protected from, which is persisting in sin. This is impossible; Allah must pardon them, either through their seeking forgiveness and repentance to Allah, or through Allah’s grace upon them. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet:
(1) O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (2) Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths
[At-Tahrim 66:1-2]
. And He said to him:
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.
[At-Tawbah 9:43]
. This is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Allah says to him: "Because you hastened and gave them permission." This is a great verse that establishes the conduct of a person: not to hasten in matters. If Allah reproached His Prophet because he gave them permission before the matter became clear to him, what about others? And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him.
[Al-Ahzab: 37]. Yes, the Messengers (peace and blessings be upon them) are protected from major sins, protected from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and protected from the basest of morals. As for sins below that level, they are not protected from them, but they are protected from persisting in them. This is not a hidden matter. We ask Allah, the Exalted, to make us and you among their followers. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
So, the author’s saying: "As for those who are not sinners" is not correct, because there is no one who does not sin, as you have heard the hadiths regarding this. Therefore, this statement by the author is not appropriate. Yes, there are people whose sins and good deeds expiate the sins without them being struck by a calamity. This is a common reality. A man narrated to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he saw a woman and did with her what a man does with his wife, except that he did not commit zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) with her. He said:
Did you witness her praying Fajr with you?
. He said: Yes. He said to him:
Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds
Sunan Ibn Majah 1398Sahih (Darussalam)
. So his Fajr prayer removed the sins. Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The five [daily] prayers, Friday to Friday and Ramadan to Ramadan make atonement for what has happened since the previous one when major sins have been avoided.
Mishkat al-Masabih 564
.
